Schizophrenia and diet

Postby wazzaone1 » Thu Dec 29, 2016 7:35 pm

Hi everyone

Im new here, my step daughter is 13 and was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia after 9 months out patient observation. She is on medication although it has recently been switched up.

My question is have any of you been using or heard of others using a ketogenic diet to aid in the treatment of schizophrenia? I have seen some sporadic stuff online with links to some mice studies and some anecdotal evidence suggesting it might be useful in treatment.

Looking forward to reading more of the posts.

Hey Warren,

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been diagnosed. 13 is a young age for a diagnosis, but hopefully early treatment can help her avoid significant psychosis in the future. I haven't heard anything about ketogenic diets helping reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. Perhaps it is true, my understanding is that the key markers of schizophrenia are chemical imbalances (apart from the diagnosable symptoms that is). So perhaps a diet would potentially positively affect symptoms. I can't offer advice, I'm not a nutritionist or a psychiatrist, but give it a shot. There are a lot of idea's for how to deal with the disease, treat it, manage it, etc. Unfortunately not much is concrete other than the symptoms being undesirable. Try to figure out what works for your daughter, but always keep an open mind to other options. If you are being told you need to do something, and it isn't working, or side effects are not manageable, don't just accept it, make sure to explore other options.

Best wishes
