Hi all! I haven't been on here in ages....deleted my account a while back and then decided to come on again.
Anyways my formal diagnosis is psychotic depression. (Aka major depression with psychotic features) However as I have done research on this there are some things I have noticed don't match up with what I experience. For example, psychotic depression is defined as psychotic symptoms that are only experienced within depressive episodes. This is not the case for me. I experience psychotic symptoms at all times, whether depressed or not. In fact, strangely enough during some depressive episodes my psychotic symptoms become barely present! (Though I have also had the opposite happen) Furthermore I didn't start experiencing depression until I was around 10, but I have experienced symptoms of psychosis since as far back as I can remember! (Hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, etc)
During my time at a hospitalization program this past summer when I mentioned this to the psychiatrist there (not who I regularly see) said it sounded more like I had schizoaffective but they weren't sure because they hadn't known me very long. The person I see regularly (she is an APN and not a psychiatrist) says that she diagnosed me w psychotic depression because I was too high functioning/didn't have the cognitive deficits that come with schizophrenia/schizoaffective. And it's true that it is characteristic of those with psychotic depression to be able to function quite normally outside of episodes, and those with psychotic depression can also be aware their psychotic symptoms are strange and thus try to hide them from others, which schizophrenics don't typically do. So that part matches with me but the rest doesn't. Am I just weird?
