Self Help Books

Postby Bailey14 » Mon Mar 02, 2015 3:42 am

Does anyone know of any self help books for schizophrenia?
I've heard that mindfulness CBT is used but can only find those books for people with depression. Does anyone know any of these books?

You can also use this thread to talk about Self help books that have been useful to you and self help in general. What has helped you lessen your symptoms?

I know my friend has a DBT book and she suggested that a section maybe helpful to me ( i should have a look at the book see if its specific to BPD or not I guess).
The section was basically a list of pleasurable activities that you should tick if you do or are willing to do them.

So I've just got a list from online and chose some activities, and planned what I need to do to do new activities and to improve on the activities I already do. Maybe others may find this helpful? I will see if it is helpful for me haha. Would prefer a book tho if anyone has any idea on a useful one... thing is i don't want to buy separate books like anxiety etc, so was wondering if there was a specific book for schizophrenia or if books are just generalized CBT and DBT?

Amazon has some, if you haven't tried that, for example:

Hey I have been seeing a clinical psychologist for my social problems in schizophrenia. He is doing DBT with me. Like you said he makes me practice mindfulness on a daily basis. Here is the link to one of the websites he recommended me to use, it is free. Other than mindfulness he also recommends me to do the loving kindness meditation. It helps because schizophrenics experience less compassion due to our illness.

I believe DBT is very useful for schizophrenics experiencing social problems.
Diagnosis: Schizophrenia.

I want to add I'd never buy the book "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Manual for Families, Patients, and Providers". Here's a quote from the book: "Antipsychotic drugs, as a group, are one of the safest groups of drugs in common use and are the greatest advance in the treatment of schizophrenia that has occurred to date" (source: http://psychcentral.com/lib/illuminatin ... izophrenia). If the author phrases it like that, it may be correct. Antipsychotics were the most sold drugs in 2009 in the US. So it's a matter of how common use is defined. But anyone who had side effects from antipsychotics knows how serious they can be and these people are not rare. So the quote is a load of b******t and if the author says that, I think the same of the book.

So take this as a warning if you wish and look for other books. :)

OK, I read more about the book and it's apparently not that bad. But the quote is very misleading.

Me personally reading anything about schizophrenia never helped me much. I would either end up depressed about how bad they said it was, or just learn stuff that did not help, but this was mostly descriptions about the disease, not how to improve your life if you have it which may be helpfull. I have been reading most of my life. I am the type of person who is powered by ideas, so i could not get enough. Just a thought though that Albert Eienstein said...."reading to much makes your thinking lazy" I guess because your not problem solving on your own, but I think there is a time to plant and a time to reap. I've read for years, planting, now im reaping the rewards of all those self help type books.
