Help for My Nephew

Postby Gem » Wed May 24, 2006 6:00 pm

Hi, All. I am the aunt of a young man who has recently been talking about strange things, and we do not know how to help. I am looking for some guidance with him, as he will not acknowledge that there is anything wrong or that he needs to see his family doctor.

Here's the background as he tells it. He has wings. God has given him the task of fighting evil in the world. He fights off dragons and kills evil people, and then sometimes God makes him bring the people back to life. He has been killed and then brought back to life. He believes he was fired from his last job because everyone knew and could see he had wings and a halo and thought he was strange. He cannot see the wings or the halo, but he knows they are there. He has the design for an engine that will solve all the energy problems in the world. His engine does not need fuel. It will be powered by magnets and a computer. Yesterday he said he sold the design for the engine but as yet has not received the money for it. Once while he was having sex with a woman, he had a baby instantaneously, but an angel appeared and immediately took the baby to heaven. He has not seen it since.

What is going on with him? He has some drug abuse history and had a serious, near-fatal accident a couple of years ago.

He is a sweet guy. He used to be a precious child. Now we are all worried about him and want to help. What do we do? He is 20 years old. Any idea what could be happening here?

I would appreciate any help or information.

Hi gem,
I'm sorry to have tell you of this... But it does sound like the onset of schizophrenia. What he is experiencing are hallucinations and delusions. Which are the most prodominent symptoms in schizophrenia. Even though he is a nice boy, if he thinks he has to kill "evil" people, he might unknowingly be a danger to himself and his family. I suggest just telling him that some of his ideas are a little bizaare, and see what he says. If he seems to angrily disagree, stop talking about it immediatly. You don't want him to feel like he can't trust you. The bottom line is you need to get him to a doctor immediatly. I wish it could be as easy as it is to say, because he will probably fight you. I always say honesty is the best policy, but in this case, you might have to trick him into going to the doctor. You or his mother might want to call the doctor and give them a heads up on what's going on. They will probably tell you what to do. but also remeber how scary this is for him too, so try and make the experience the least traumatic as possible. Make sure there will be someone there that he really trusts. Also, do some research on the treatments, medication, and alternative treatments. You can't always put all of your trust in the doctor, anti-psychotics can have some very bad side-effects, so make sure that you and your nephew know what he is taking, weigh out your options, and the possible side-effects. He may only need to be medicated for a short amount of time. I hope everything goes well with you and your family. And if he gets the right treatment, he should be back to himself soon. Schizophrenia is a very sad and scary illness, But many people live long happy and productive lives. My heart goes out to you and your family.
Take care of yourself
Amy
