Diet and Schizophrenia

Postby Ichi_Darake » Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:49 pm

I have been noticing lately that a change in my diet helps to put some of my schizophrenia into remission. My dietary changes haven't rid me of the illness completely, but on certain days it does seem to help.

For example: When I started consuming brown rice instead of white rice, or when I ate more fruits and vegetables instead of sugary snacks, my paranoia was lessened to a certain extent. Have any other schizophrenics here found success in changing their diets in order to lessen their schizophrenic symptoms?

I'm glad someone has brought this up, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. In answer to your question, I have also found that sugar and caffeine can trigger paranoia. I don't think you need to cut it out completely, just be mindful of the fact that it can be a trigger. Circumstantial triggers can involve large crowds of people which I tolerate in small doses. When I'm with other people it's easier (they have a buffering effect) but crowds still drain me.

I've also heard that gluten (wheat protein) and casein (milk protein) can aggravate symptoms of schizophrenia. I may try to cut back on these nutrients in the future if necessary.

Purely as an update, I also managed to control some of my symptoms thanks to the help of some vitamin C therapy (I eat about 2-3 oranges a day) and the inclusion of Omega-3 fatty acids (I eat lots of fish). Introducing these elements into my diet has made me feel less paranoid and I'm no longer having thoughts of hurting myself.
