What medication do they give Schizophrenics?

Postby Evil Witch Shrink » Fri Apr 14, 2006 11:41 am

What generally are the standard meds given to Schizophrenics?
Would it be Anti-Depressant and Anti-Psychotic?

It depends. Antipsychotics for general psychosis, antidepressants, ssris, moais, whatever, for some negetive symptoms. Different meds work for different people.

Although, Antipsychotics are usually given to Scizophrenics as first priority to lessen hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking. Mot likely to differentiate the personality and difficulties from with and without psychosis.

Cheers.

Bit of Both, thats what my doc prescribed for me...currently I'm on Olanzapine wafers for the Anti Psychotics and aropax for the anti depressant and benzotropine to eliviate the side effects(the rocking motion i get...can't seem to stand still)

But It depends on your state of mind and diagnosis from your doc...but be honest don't neglect to to tell him or her the negatives they're here to help you stabilize and get better. :D

Hello

I know that lithium is often used for people experiencing mania and also for psychotic illnesses as a mood stabliser.

Normally, a-typical anti-psychotics are used, such as olanzapine, risperidone and abilify etc.

Clare :)

First i want to give you this.
http://www.schizophrenia.com/housing.html

http://www.schizophrenia.com/newsletter ... /meds.html

I am bipolar 1 with brief psychotic features. Usually enviromental, this is the first time in 7 years of moding I've seen mania and sz in the same sentence. we talking bout sz or biplolar here? Psychosis is the only relative factor.

I take olanzapine for the positive sypmtoms and rispiridone for the negative symptoms/mood stabilizer. I am also on celexa for depression and help with the negative symptoms. I could see lithium being used if the patient had schizoaffective with bipolar tendencies.
