Past Schizophrenia?

Postby johndavid » Sun Mar 03, 2013 6:17 pm

Hi all,
Since i'm new to this site, i'm not too sure wether this topic has been discussed in the past. Also, please forgive my english mistakes as I am French.
So, basically i think i used to exhibit schizophrenia symptoms back when i was a kid (age 7-13 years). I remember once looking at my toys on top of the shelf while laying in bed, and noticing that they would start moving, but as soon as i'd blink they'd sort of get back to normal, then start moving again. Also, I remember once looking at the corner of my room, and seeing a shadow running quickly and hiding under my bed. This particular incident freaked me out, and i remember calling my parents and crying, they told me it was just my imagination. Another thing i remember is laying in bed and hearing some of my school friends talking, as if they were in the next room.
I'm 18 now, and i don't experience any of those symptoms anymore, however i don't like being in public, and enjoy staying alone. However, i am worried that these symptoms might come back in the future, particularly since mental illness is common in my family (my mother suffers from bipolar disorder, and my uncle suffers from depression).
Should I talk to a psychologist about this? What do you guys think?
Thanks!

I think your English is excellent, for what it's worth.

It would be very very unusual to have schizophrenia as a child and then "grow out of it." So I doubt that was what was happening. Some of the symptoms you describe are pretty normal - hearing voices when you're in bed or falling asleep is a normal phenomenon called "hypnagogic hallucinations." I've had this many times. The other things are harder to say one way or another whether they're really hallucinations. They don't sound clear-cut and if you're not experiencing anything like that now, I wouldn't worry too much.

But not wanting to go out in public and wanting to be alone could be a lot of things. Maybe you're basically shy and introverted, or maybe you have anxiety or depression. If you're very worried about having a mental illness, that could be anxiety. If these problems bother you, absolutely you should definitely see a counselor and talk about them.

Good luck.
