I mostly enjoy punk rock and ska. Growing up, it was literally all I would listen to... since then, my tastes have branched out a lot - everything from Primus to Bob Dylan to a Tribe Called Quest. My taste has become increasingly eclectic over the years. But it'll always be about punk to me. Rancid, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, Guttermouth, Screeching Weasel... I could go on and on here. I eat that stuff up.

Though my favorite song is probably by the Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin'. Whenever I hear that song, nothing else matters for those seven and a half minutes. I get totally enveloped in the music.

Favorite band is Rancid. Definitely. Their music turned into a significant coping mechanism for me. Even today, when I feel anxious to any degree, I'll turn on their music and the demons subside.

Lyrics, it's really hard to pick. I have a lot of "favorite" lines, but for an overall song, probably Blackball by the Offspring. That song made me realize that smart people are essentially trapped by the intellectual dullards of the world. By definition, the idiots and mediocre constitute the majority, so the social constructs people life their lives by are developed by them - not the intelligentsia. So it's either give in and become a sycophant or constantly live against the grain. I think the latter is the obvious choice, but I still am not particularly a fan of the strife that comes along with knowingly being a contrarian. Like everyone else here, I'd rather just be left alone and let live how I please. Anyway, I'll stop there, since I could rant about this all day (I have an array of essays covering this same topic).

Hope this doesn't class as reviving an old thread or anything, but it's not that old and it's in the stickied thread so bleh. I don't really listen to your standard stuff anymore, I mostly listen to music from the Touhou Project series of games, and arrangements of them. Mostly just instrumentals, although some vocal arranges occasionally.

There doesn't seem to be a way to embed youtube music on this forum, but no matter.

That song is my namesake and one of my current favourites from Touhou Project, although my favourite changes a lot, and there are a LOT of songs from it. I'm not sure why I like it so much, I guess it seems to instill a deep feeling of melancholy. And melancholy is a nice feeling to have, for me.

Here's a vocal arrangement of it, if that's your thing.

To be honest though, I listen to so many genre's, there's almost nothing I don't like so I just posted my favourite I guess. If that still isn't your sort of thing, maybe you'd prefer something like a metal arrangement of a Touhou song?

There's just too much stuff I like. xP

The funny thing is that I love very emotional music, relationshippy stuff.

One song that I've always felt a bit of a kinship with is Postal Service's The District Sleeps Alone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FqmJy8HzQI

Smeared black ink
Your palms are sweaty
And I'm barely listening
To last demands
I'm staring at the asphalt wondering
What's buried underneath where I am

(I love the idea that he's not paying attention and you know the other person has got to be making some sort of emotional plea)

I'll wear my badge
A vinyl sticker with big block letters
Adherent to my chest
That tells your new friends
I am a visitor here: I am not permanent <--- I feel that way all the time.
And the only thing keeping me dry is where I am

You seem so out of context
In this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key
Explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving

It's lyrics would have to be taken as mostly metaphors, but 'Fireflies' by Owl City really seems to be the closest to a Secret Schizoid Anthem as I've come.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psuRGfA ... ata_player

"It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep, 'cause everything is never as it seems." I suppose if you take being awake as a metaphor for being emotional, you may have something there.

And as for pretty much every other lyric in there, they all sound like a schizoid fantasy to me.

Personally, I have trouble listening to modern music. It makes it difficult for me to relate to the tastes of those my age, though I know it's because I really don't want to relate to people my age.
I like punk rock and hardcore; though most rock falls somewhere between boring (heavy metal) and repulsive (alternative rock, emo, etc). I like to think of punk as primarily the descendant of rock and roll (especially surf rock) and reggae, which I also really like. I can't stand pop-punk, even the non-major label stuff like rancid, though I don't mind the clash.

Reggae, by the way, seems to be an example of what rock would sound like in a just world. The bassist and drummers carry everything, and the guitar just chimes in instead of taking up the whole song.

The Indelicates - We Hate the Kids

Every generation gets fooled again
And every generation is to blame
And its no good saying its not in your name
'cause it is in your name
And this generation is the same
And this generation is to blame
And I'm sorry that I can't join in any more
But I've been let down too many times before
Oh yeah we mean it
We hate the kids
So dance dance dance to the radio tonight

I wanted to believe in rock'n'roll stars
I wanted to believe in contemporary art
I wanted to aspire to a higher path
But there's no higher path
It was ever thus, and it was ever you
And it's ever us because we'll do it too
And we're sorry to the all the disinherited meek, and
We're sorry for this con-trick that we play on the people
Oh yeah we mean it
We hate the kids
So dance dance dance to the radio tonight

And nobody ever comes alive
And the journalists clamour round glamour like flies
And boys who should know better grin and get high
With fat men who once met the MC5
And no one discusses what they don't understand
And no one does anything to harm the brand
And this gift is an illusion, this isn't hard
Absolutely anyone can play the ######6 guitar
Oh yeah we mean it
We hate the kids
Useless children genuflecting
To the idols who exploit them
Open mouthed and arsed expecting
Some god to anoint them
Dance Dance Dance to this radio tonight

And there's always a monk to get set on fire
And there's always a crackhead charismatic liar
And there's always a depth to which you can aspire
And there's always a teenager due to expire
Pop had a beginning, it grew and was tended
Now it is rotten. Let it be ended.
Let every hopeless case that every drummer befriended,
Every seven-inch that every student intended
Every groupie and ligger and identity seeker
Every druggy and drinker and every loudspeaker
Be done with, be piled up, tossed, set alight
No more music, thank you, goodnight.
