This song has always struck me as having a schizoid feel to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMRdEpUXefk

As a whole though, I don't listen to a lot of music with lyrics. I mostly listen to instrumental rock with a focus on electric guitar. I do also listen to Classic Rock and some 80's-early 90's Metal(none of that growling crap that got popular in the 90's).

Yeah, that's one of my favorite Anthrax songs.

That is possibly the most annoying trend in modern music. There have been a few instances where I have stumbled across a new band and said to myself I wonder what they sound like. The song begins with interesting instrumental parts (guitar, drums, etc.) ... and then the 'vocalist' comes in and ruins everything. It is fairly clear they have talent, but they put it to waste. Even worse is that there are a few of these bands that actually have people who can sing, they just don't do it for most of their songs.
Who actually listens to this stuff?

Examples in Rock Band format.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sNiUqVk5CY
About 1:40 the singer comes in and everything goes downhill from there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H4XAZIWV0Q
Again at about 1:40 the song transitions from interesting to un-listenable when the singer comes in.
At 2:55 the singer stops again for a bit and you get a solo, which sounds good.

I do.

I should have figured somebody would say that.
If the vocal track was removed and it was just the instrumentals I probably would too. :|

But growling, gurgling and schrieking are really only ways of using the voice as instrument. :?

Surely this piece wouldn't be the same without the singer:

I listen to the 'growling' stuff too sometimes. As said by Archigallus, it's just another way of using the voice as an instrument. I like that way of using it. I don't like Satriani type stuff, but that doesn't invalidate it and make it 'crap'. It just makes it something I'm not interested in. Unless we're talking Bruno Mars. That's just straight up crap.

And that style of vocalization has been around since the early 80's. I had a tape of a friends cousin's death metal band with that style of vocals in 1987, they were nowhere near the first to do it.

I love how even in a forum such as this, which advocates for individuality, we can still agree to disagree about what music is crap and what isn't! lol

Any takers on John Mayer?

True, but that is so far up the Mohs Scale of Rock Hardness (at least a step or two above my examples) that I find it un-listenable anyway. It is just noise to me.

The vocalist reminds me of a zombie ... vomiting.

In terms of musical taste, I assume different strokes for different folks applies here.
Actually when I think about it there are a few songs on my ipod that do have some growling/screamed vocals on them, they are just not utilized for the entire song, more as a punctuation to intense moments.

Also ...

I lol'd. 100% - Full Combo. In another one they made a vacuum cleaner do it.

Florence and the machine - Remain Nameless. It's off their new album Ceremonials.
I interpret it to be about wanting to be seperate. I was on the verge of tears when I first heard it.

I'm new btw.
