Schizoid Playlist

Postby MsAnthropy » Mon Jan 23, 2012 4:04 pm

I thought I would do this to not only get a sense of how people view themselves (which I'm always fascinated about) but also to discover new music if this helps me to do so.

I've noticed, it seems, that a lot of schizoids love music, maybe more than "regular" people, which is how I feel about music. The idea of living without it or NOT having music at my disposal is a nightmare. It is one of the only things I am comfortable showing emotions towards. :o

Whether I'm right or wrong about that assumption, I would like to hear specifically what songs you've come across that you identify with as your "Schizoid (or secret schizoid like myself) Anthem" or a schizoid themed song.
Here are mines!:

Clock with No Hands...The Roots
Perfectly Lonely...John Mayer
Waiting for an Invitation...Benji Hughes
The Sadder But Wiser Girl...Seth MacFarlane
A Mistake...Fiona Apple

Feel free to also explain why you like/love that song in particular or how you identify with it...
Melancholy is the pleasure in being sad.

Helloween - Don't stop being crazy

I think if you read the lyrics it will be obvious why I like this song. I discovered it a long, long time ago. It kinda encourages me to stay the way I am. I think it nicely describes my life. Even the "it's a lie we could not learn to fly" part. I love it because people often tell me that something is impossible but it actually never is. Not for me at least.
The best line: "When you talk you talk merciless the bothering truth".
I'm often very astonished I am the only one ready to tell out loud something everyone else thinks about. Apparently I break some kind of social convention by doing so, but I don't care. And later people tell me "you were right to say it". Nice, but why was I the only one then? I don't know what they are afraid of :?

Also - Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.
If there's trouble...
...all us freaks have is each other.

I dont know about Schizoid anthem but my life anthem is Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
Captures my simplified views on the rat race with a touch of nihilism.

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change
Trapped in my mind and stuck in my ways. The "Im a million different people" bit can relate to how I put on a facade depending on my environ.

Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
Well I dont pray since Im not really religious  and the last part talks of my sick obsession with music, which is probably my only hobby

I think Simon and Garfunkel were schizoid. :o

They should speak for themselves...
I'm just a temporally displaced, asocial hippie. What can I say?
I've found quite a few more in the prog. metal vein, particularly, but I haven't had my coffee yet.

Also Rush's song Subdivisions, performed by Jacob Moon atop a building.

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

Switchfoot (ironically a "christian" band   )- "More Than Fine"

When I wake in the morning,
I want to blow into pieces.
I want more than just ok, more than just ok.
When I'm up with the sunrise
I want more than just blue skies.
I want more than just ok, more than just ok

I think this is simple. I want to experience more than contentment.

Coldplay -Things I Don't Understand

How infinite is space
And who decides your fate
Why everything will dissolve into sand

How to avoid defeat
Where truth and fiction meet
Why nothing ever turns out as you planned

These are things that I don't understand
Yeah these are things that I don't understand

The song is basically about figuring out life and trying to make sense of the world

I forgot about The Verve! yes I love that song too.
Oh! Also Who Cares, by Gnarls Barkley
The first verse goes,

Basically I'm complicated
I have a hard time taking the easy way
I wouldn't call it schizophrenia
But I'll be at least 2 people today...

If that's okay

And I can go on and on and on... but who cares?

Solitary Shell by Dream theater http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FVp2rw1BFQ
"He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy normal boy
His mama always did her best
And he was daddy's pride and joy

He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
and steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell

As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
but in every other way he was fine

He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell"
Relate to it up to this point, but then it starts being more about schizophrenia.

There's also another song by this band that I like called misunderstood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdpCnRSeshU Don't know what it's about, think it's sopmething religious but I always liked these lines "Waiting in the calm of desolation",
"Sleeping
In the depths of isolation
Trying to wake
From this daydream of illusion"
and
"How can I know so many
Never really knowing anyone"

And this song sums up how I think of most people http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEmGyil02x4
"Truth, the most deadly weapon ever discovered by humanity. Capable of destroying entire perceptual sets, cultures, and realities. Outlawed by all governments everywhere. Possession is normally punishable by death."

None. Not one. Ever. And I listen to a ton of music. Maybe occasionally there's one or two lines in songs that I can relate to. I can't think of a single artist I would identify as schizoid. Neal Peart from Rush possibly, as a lyricist.

I do listen to music a lot. Mostly to get "in touch" with my emotional side. Also as a way of learning. Everything *I think* I know about love- how I should act, what other people's feelings and expectations are and so on I learned by listening to love songs.

I do notice I have an affinity for artists who (I think) are avoidant. Nick Drake comes to mind right away. They often write from an outsider's/loners perspective, but they also have an emotional perspective that I do not relate to.

In reading a book recently called The Loner's Manifesto (which isn't about Schizoid's as much as it is loners in general), they talked about "Famous Loners" being hard to find in the entertainment world because they have a hard time adjusting to the expectations others place upon them or continuing their creative processes without being derailed by anxiety or overwhelming discontent for "Hollywood" and the like.

Points off for you for no answer :!:
