Considering I have persistent depression and no helpful med yet, about as good as I can feel. I suppose the unemployment and having to take care of a family isn't ideal either. I still have my physical health but a little overweight at the moment. It could be worse.

I'm sorry you're feeling down. I find too much idle time makes me prone to depression and angry thoughts. Hope that helps.

Well, the thing with depression is that it doesn't always have to make sense. I am getting used to that fact. It's been worse after the major depression so it's just another adjustment I have to make. Being dysthymic was my first ever diagnosis. Sometimes I forget that when discussing my other traits.

I am feeling like every part that I assumed was part of me is being broken down. I am left with this question:

When a caterpillar turns into a butterfly in a process where his entire body is broken down and rebuilt, is he in fact the same species or something entirely different?

"In effect, the animal is a chimera, an amalgam of two, where the first one lives and dies ... and then the other emerges."

If everything changes about you and nothing remains the same, are you still the same person? Is there an essence left behind that cannot be defined but still makes you you?

^ the observer inside that perceives it and watches it all take place doesn't change. The observer of the observer.

Thanks for asking.

I feel a hunger in my stomach. I am not sure if it is because I need food or because something else is missing. I don't know. I feel a pain in my head. I don't know if it is because I smoked too many cigarettes or because I've been thinking way too hard beyond how much I usually think for the last three days.
Other than that I am doing okay. The usual pain of my illness is getting better and I am going to go outside for a little wander around because it is sunny and I can hear birds chirping.

The caterpillar and the Butterfly are one. The DNA is identical. The caterpillar merely goes through a metamorphosis, a change. The Chameleon can effect its own change, according to the danger it faces or the degree of safety it feels. We all change. Nearly all the cells in our body renew themselves every eight years or so. With, at least one exception, being that of our brain cells. Our change may not be as dramatic as that of the caterpillar..or the chameleon; but we all have potential to transform in other ways. It is this 'potential' to change that makes us unique...that makes us human.

Well put. Experiences whether good or bad may change how you think but how you think is what makes you you. Your thoughts lead you to this metamorphosis of self.

I went through something similar quite recently after making huge changes in my life (and a head injury  ). It's disconcerting to notice yourself change drastically in a short time period, isn't it?
I would say that you are the same person, you are still you, no matter what, as Holodeck says.
However, to answer the thread question, I feel generally worse since this change, like a screw has come loose. My outbursts of rage have been more frequent, and are basically just self harm at this point. I might make a thread about this. Do any of you guys experience similar bursts of rage?
Hope you're all doing well.
