Maintaining Employment

Postby iabsurdlyexist » Thu Jul 26, 2018 12:24 pm

What are some of your reasons for losing and/or quitting jobs? Personal experiences? As you know, I struggle to decipher my internal landscape but some of you may have experiences I relate to.

My father has always had issues maintaining employment and when I asked him, he said he struggled to deal with companies that treated people like $#%^. Sort of a moral dilemma sort of thing. Considering he has spent most of his life working in machine shops, he may have experienced this time and time again. After thinking about it, that was an issue I had with my last job. Is that enough to warrant frustration and breaking down? I feel like there should be more to it.

I lost my last job a week ago or so because I crashed. The Welbutrin they put me on for smoking cessation caused me to see things that weren't there like evil eyes. I think it was too much dopamine which is a cause psychosis.

I'm glad for the times I don't have to be a wage slave. Like today, I had a long, relaxing yet productive day. But if I were at work, I would be doing crap and would only just now be starting my first break.

Wellbutrin moved me a bit closer to schizotypal while I was on it – I started seeing a lot of connections that weren't there. Magical thinking I guess, kinda wild. It's too bad because it was the only antidepressant that even half-worked.

That's my dad too. Hopefully yours didn't quit within a month or so before he could've retired.

I have been good at maintaining thanks to two scenarios.

1) I worked with a guy I was married to. He made me work even when he could clearly see me having anxiety attacks. That job lasted 4 1/2 years.

2) I now work from home. I can take breaks and occasionally (but not often) days off when I need to. It took years to get to that though and I was able to maintain sticking with the job thanks to the same guy in the 1st description quitting his job 3 days after I took up working from home. Suffice it to say 3 days doesn't tell whether it'll be a feast or famine job. Since I didn't have a choice I had to work insane hours until things calmed the hell down. It's been 6 years since I started working from home.

Most of the time it's just been the end of the job, moving on to something else or a company closing. I did quit one job because my boss was unethical and I could no longer tolerate it.

Maintaining employment is easy enough if you keep going in on autopilot, repress yourself just enough, and avoid too much socialization.

I relapsed.

*TW*

Smoking supplements my ability to sit quietly in nature and think positively.

While on Welbutrin:

I was half asleep/half wake and a yellowish ghost bird sat on my shoulder. At the time, I was considering becoming a Catholic. The bird said "Beware of haughty attitudes. Beware of haughtiness. And it's 2018. Become a Presbyterian." I looked into it and Presbyterians have some surprisingly progressive views. I had no clue beforehand. Anyway, now I'm secular.

I guess I was having ideas of reference: "the notion that everything one perceives in the world relates to one's own destiny". Really, it was a bad trip, and it lasted way too long.

Wellbutrin seems to be known for inducing or worsening psychotic symptoms, but I don't get the impression that anyone is looking into the phenomenon too closely. Personally, I'm staying away from amphetamines.

I would like to borrow your bird, I like its advice.
