Wow, thanks for this take. I just had a coffee maker stolen from me by my mother (who has stage 4 cancer... things have been rough) and have been trying to reason about why she would get so pretty without an obvious reason. I've been checked out for weeks on account of burnout, not really handling the SPD stuff very well, so I can see her pulling such a stunt for the sake of attention.

To the OP: I don't worry about such issues because I make up for any lack of apparent engagement with assertiveness. If someone takes advantage of me, they get a world class parental style lecture for the low price of free. Whatever defense signals I forget to send via "normal" channels are made up for with a clear commitment to a sense of correctness. Of course, YMMV...
