I think that work eventually becomes so routine that you can become a happy little worker robot on autopilot and forget about those unwanted emotions. It's quite nice. Then you come home and can support yourself and buy yourself nice things and are thoroughly wiped out from your stressful day so that you can melt nicely into oblivion for 7-8 hours and wake up and do it all again.

That's actually the most appealing description of a soul-crushing hamster wheel existence I've ever read.

I question why this actually works for the majority of the population. While we hear a lot that most people hate their jobs, they are fairly good at doing just this. The funny thing is, when I was in DBT, people struggled with mindfulness and I was thinking how strange it was that people couldn't just chill and empty their mind. I haven't quite figured out how that applies but my brain said to state it anyway.

I'm feel the same way. The thing is, with SPD you have anhedonia which makes working jobs you don't enjoy even more intolerable. My family members who do not have SPD at least feel they are working for a purpose, to save money to do things they enjoy, to use to care for those they love, etc. I never see it that way. Having the majority of my time spent doing things I abhor (and being forced to interact with people) makes life seem even more pointless and intolerable.

I told my daughter yesterday that my dream was basically to not have to do. So, the money I earn is so that I do not have to do. If I get the bug, I'll do something but it's really that simple. I don't know how many times I've said, once you are 18, I don't care. I know it sounds heartless but I provide in the ways I can while my wife attends to the emotional stuff. My kids seem to understand this fairly well. I didn't mean for stuff to turn out this way so I just make the best of it.

Doesn't that belong with anti-social disorders? At least for me, that seems like effort.

It's easier than devising some elaborate scheme to get them to step onto a catapult.

Seriously though, sometimes going to work can be a good way to keep from drifting too far into your isolation. Or even to practice your social skills, should you feel a desire/need to do so.

That said, the majority of people you have to deal with at work are enough to make a person schizoid. But there are sometimes exceptions. I've met some interesting people through work, and have made a couple of friends as well. The work atmosphere is frequently social, so there's less pressure to actually be social, as in at a party or something. If you feel overwhelmed by social co-workers you can always say that you're busy and need to concentrate on your workload.

I think MightBeCrazy might be surprised that after the initial hurtle of finding a job and integrating themselves into a work setting that it's really not so bad.
