Diagnostic Criteria, Schizoid Personality Disorder

Postby TheLonelyStranger » Thu Mar 18, 2004 6:15 am

Diagnostic Criteria

A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in interpersonal settings, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family

almost always chooses solitary activities

has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person

takes pleasure in few, if any, activities

lacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives

appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others

shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affectivity

Does not occur exclusively during the course of Schizophrenia, a Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features, another Psychotic Disorder, or a Pervasive Developmental Disorder and is not due to the direct physiological effects of a general medical condition.

Note: If criteria are met prior to the onset of Schizophrenia, add "Premorbid," e.g., "Schizoid Personality Disorder (Premorbid)."

Differential Diagnosis*
Delusional Disorder; Schizophrenia; and Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features; Autistic Disorder; Asperger's Disorder; Personality Change Due to a General Medical Condition; symptoms that may develop in association with chronic substance use; Schizotypal Personality Disorder; Paranoid Personality Disorder; Avoidant Personality Disorder; Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. (Mentalhealth.com)

*Differential Diagnosis means all the other illnesses that must be ruled out before a Dx of an illness may be made. It is just as much of the diagnosis as meeting the criteria is and cannot be ignored.

I'm new.

I have not been officially diagnosed as schizoid--though I do believe that diagnosis fits best.

My question is:

Does anyone else forget to bathe, take medication, things like that? I am off in la-la land most of the time--wherever that might be.

Thanks.

Guess for me its both. Mostly my teeth though. Either I remember and just don't care or I care but am too engrossed in fantasy to do anything about it.

Don't mean to sound rude but sloppiness isn't a required trait, especially as it can be a sign of low self-esteem which is rather unfitting of the true schizoid spirit.

Not bathing, and losing personal hygeine is a symptom of depression, not schizoid. Forgetfulness is again, unaffiliated with schizoid.. its just a personality flaw i suppose, or a bonus, depending on how you want to think about it.

Absent mindedness, however, is listed as a common trait among schizoids in the research literature.

Personally I am terrible with names. When I meet a new person I never remember their name. After just a few minutes it's gone from my memory. i think it's because of the stress involved with talking to a person I've never talked to before. It's so bad I start to sweat (starting on my lower back and then, if i get really uncomfortable, my forehead) I remember things work related because of the concern to keep the job, and also not kill anyone! ( I work in a hospital ) If I lose my job I can no longer be self sufficient and that is of paramount importance to me.
