The Book Thread.

Postby TheBookGuy » Tue Apr 24, 2018 9:13 pm

Hello, I'm new here. I read a lot and would like to hear what some of you read on this forum. Maybe we could critique, praise, discuss books we have read here in this thread. Maybe even give tips to one another on great books?

I, myself, are right now reading Tolstoy's War & Peace (Jesus, what a brick!) But it's good, really good.

When I'm finished with that one i'm thinking of reading David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, but I have heard that it's even worse than what I'm reading now. It stands in my bookshelf intimidating me. Maybe in a week or so, I throw down the gauntlet and crack it open.

Have any of you read any of these two books?

I have to go to bed know. I'm starting to feel the effects of my propavan and Imovane.

Looking forward to hear what you are reading. /TheBookGuy

Hi,
I haven't read the two books you mentioned, though I've read shorter works by Tolstoy. The fiction book I'm currently reading is The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende. I like the magical realism aspect. And to read about a place and people completely different from my life. I like Garcia Marquez too.
I'm a slow reader and usually have several books on the go including factual ones.

Thinking, Fast and Slow is fun, but takes a while to digest.

Influence is interesting, but I can't tell if it's an educated observation versus anything scientific.

The Selfish Gene is okay, but nothing spectacular.

Cryptonomicon is fine, but too long.

The Godfather was exciting at times, boring at others.

The Count of Monte Cristo is overrated junk. (the non-abridged version)

While it has a few interesting tales, I wouldn't recommend anyone to bother with the bible.

That's it for now.

I've read Infinite Jest. It's very inaccessible. There's a good bit of cynical, morose kind of "the world is hell" humor, if you can get over the initial hump of the book not being written in a way that will make it easy for you to comprehend. Some people think that's what makes it brilliant. I don't know if I agree.

I'm not reading anything right now. I tried to read A Wrinkle in Time when the movie came out, but I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Probably my favorite book or book series ever is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, partly because of how it completely flouts the hero narrative, and partly just because I just really love anti-similes and how accessible Douglas Adam's writing style is.

I tried to read Karl Marx's "Capital" last year. Maybe that was my subconscious self-sabotaging way of convincing myself that I'm just not meant to be reading books...
Is this now?

I'll read something by Wodehouse occasionally. He's fairly relatable on a personal level.

@smirks If you like Douglas Addams you might wanna pick up my favorite "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." The sequel is great too. It's called "Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul."

Oh, I've read everything by him. I tend to read through authors end to end when I find one that I like. Hate the tv series though.

Which one hah... yeah the first one was terrible and I cringed when they decided to try again. I've heard others say the new one is ok but I figure I'll prefer the books. :P

Both. I guess it's hard to bring Douglas Adams to film. The Hitchhiker's film was a mediocre adaptation as well.
