Schizoid during the holidays

Postby Aikenhead » Sat Dec 16, 2017 4:41 am

Christmas and New Years are fast approaching, which normally means family gatherings, dinners and festive drinking.

How do the schizoids here handle the holidays? Do you partake, or do you spend the "jolly season" alone? For the younger posters, are you pressured by parents/guardians to join in?

Do any of you enjoy this time of year?

thank god that my family are Muslims XD.
but in a serious note, i don't like holidays that involve family stuff but since my family are Muslims, i got to enjoy new years the schizoid way, by sitting in my room late at night till 4-5 am with awesome room service next door (mom make meal, popcorn and other holidays stuff in the living room) that is important coz of the laziness, watching good new year eve TV show and programs, forever alone :) not bad right?
i would say this my favorite holiday, more then Islamic holidays which are annoying as much as christian one.

Last month my mom called me when she new I couldn't answer. I called back and she didn't answer. I left a message, and she hasn't called since. Not bothering to try calling her again either.

For the last few years...since 4 years ago (?) I haven't seen my family for the holidays. Lot of bad memories with them, so I'd rather not. My boyfriend's family seems to like to meet up for every holiday. They're ok. We show up for some. We didn't this Thanksgiving, and simply had a quiet dinner at home.

New Year's doesn't bother me, but wish I could have a family bond with my own. Sadly my mom's more of a type who's never wrong and continues to dramatically harass and guilt trip.

Well that was nice while it lasted. She called, and right as my mom started guilting me to come over for the holidays my boyfriend shouted that dinner was done. I'm keeping him.

Christmas - small family gathering with nice meal. More eating than talking at least from my side. Nice nap after. I am an atheist but I don't mind the tradition.

New Year - home alone in my room with my cat watching movies or playing games, the way I like it. Just a regular day off. When I was in teens we used to gather in a friend's vacation house, lots of drinking and smoking, some light drugs and stuff. I usually had to get pretty hammered to be more social, I don't practice that any more, don't like not being in control of myself.

I work most holidays except for Christmas day itself, as it's the only day my workplace is closed. In general, I don't like when family comes over to where I stay to visit, but I don't mind attending a family even at someone else's place or a public place for a set amount of time. And of course I like free, ready-made food with no clean up.

What irritates me about the holidays is that it disrupts my routine in small but annoying ways. I can't make a quick trip to the supermarket because it's always crowded with people buying food for their holiday feasts. The Italian deli I go to once or twice a week changes it's menu so most of the stuff I regularly buy isn't available. Not a big deal, unless you're OCDPD.

New Years is annoying because I go to bed early and can count on being awakened by fireworks and people screaming their heads off because the clock struck twelve. The Fourth of July is worse in that respect.

Also, I'm getting more and more weary of having to deflect questions about "what I'm doing for the holidays". Most of my family lies stinking in the earth so some of the time it's hard to lie about it. This year I made up a sister who lives upstate. I'll be staying with her where we will spend the day hunting wild animals and the evening grinding them into sausage.

One thing I do like about Christmas is that I get two days of peace. Lots of people leave town, everyone else has plans, dinners, parties, so I can be assured there will be no phone calls or emails for me to ignore. Since so much is closed, I make sure I have on hand what I will need to hole up in my apartment for a couple of days. This is also the reason I like blizzards and huge snowstorms. I like knowing I couldn't go out even if I wanted to, and it pleases me to think of all the people who are going stir crazy in their homes.

Left to myself, I would definitely choose to spend holidays alone, but due to feelings of guilt and obligation I force myself to spend time with my family during the holidays. The experience itself is extremely stressful and torturous for me, but I figure a week or two out of twelve months is the least I can do since I don't even email, call or text them the rest of the year.
