I live in a city of 50,000 which is very safe, particularly my area of the city, so I have no problem being out on the streets at night. But there is dark and there is dark because in a city of this size there is light everywhere at night, even in residential areas. So when I am out walking at night there are very few areas that are truly "dark".
Yesterday we had our first snowfall here that stayed on the ground, maybe a few inches. Last night I went out for a walk and it was still lightly snowing, but even though it was only 9 on a Saturday night there was nobody outside, almost no traffic. So I was able to take a walk for an hour and a half without meeting a single person and because of the new snow it was actually brighter out because the snow was reflecting every bit of light out there and since it was cloudy that light was reflected down as well. But honestly, even in the summer I can see just fine outside at night. It's not like being in a rural area where it is really pitch black and when you look up you are shocked at how many stars there are in the sky.
So as a schizoid, when it is "dark" where I live gives me an opportunity to be outside in quiet and solitude. Even in warm weather I seldom meet another person while outside and I'm surprised at how often when I do that they will cross the street before they reach me--maybe they don't want to encounter anyone either. So I am fortunate to live where I don't have to fear the night or the dark.
