Does anyone have any close relatives with SPD?
My sister also has a severe case of SPD as I do. This has given me great insight as to how others experience things with severe SPD (in this case, a female with it). Seeing a lot of yourself in another person is definitely a pleasant reminder that you aren't the only one out there...so that is a positive aspect, no doubt.
Anyway, I do believe it is a genetic thing...though not sure on the specific genetic codes involved.

My father has (at least) schizoid tendencies. I'm not close to him so I don't know anything at all about his internal life, but even when I was a kid, I observed that he had no friends of his own (he and my mother were friends with a few other couples, and my mother did have some of her own friends) and he was stilted and uncomfortable in conversation with anyone outside of the family.

My father has schizoid tendencies too. Not many friends, emotionally cold and indifferent towards people, not very open about his personal life, etc. He also has some odd beliefs that seem almost schizotypal, like a strong belief in the paranormal.
He's also a narcissist though, which makes the picture a bit foggy.

Not schizoid specifically. I have some socially withdrawn relatives though (mostly anxiety disorders). It's given me no insight.

I have noticed some tendencies in some relatives, on one side of the family. Not as fully expressed as it is in me, though. They got married and had families, etc., but had no interest in socialising apart from what was required at the bare minimum. Preferring to be locked away in solitude.

Well...that is still more socialization (on the part of your relatives) than I could handle, no doubt.

The requirements for a diagnosis of "SPD" seem to be quite subjective. Whether or not I "have" it, I suppose, would depend on the opinion of the psychologist that I see, which would itself depend on his own perceptions, and then depend on my willingness to accept both the existence of such a thing and the capability of this person to diagnose it. The same process would need to be applied to any others that might be considered to have it. Since it is not an observable condition like chicken pox or even one that produces clear and relatible physical symptoms like a fever, it is indeed a shadowy field which by logic defies such a laissez faire attitude of casual or even self determination.
