Schizoid and narcissism?

Postby lindi » Thu Apr 14, 2016 4:58 pm

Do they ever mix? Can they even theoretically mix, or are they polar opposites? I want to hear your views and definitely also the reasoning behind it (other than "I read it somewhere" - or if you read about it, could you summarize the reasonings there).

Do you think you personally might have narc traits?

And what would you consider healthy narcissism (if there's such a thing)?

As for me, I can certainly see myself having some narc traits. I don't yearn for admiration and I wouldn't stomp on other people's rights to get my way (except maybe a little bit, given the chance  ).
But I am very self-centered (the world might not revolve around me, but "my world" sure does) and selfish (seems like my motives are all selfish at the core).
Also, I have a certain sense of "superiority" - not like I'm better compared to others, but rather that I'm detached from the comparisons and hierarchies of this world. As if I'm a very separate entity begrudgingly tolerating the lowish living standards of this world. Relating to that, I do have the apparently narcissist notion that I "deserve" a nice life by default, and any efforts on my part are a bonus (or should lead to an even nicer life).
But maybe these are just completely normal thoughts, devoid of any unhealthy narcissism... who knows? Literally, I'm asking if anyone knows :|

Not only is my answer yes but a lot of what you mentioned is considered by some to be a necessary part of a schizoid diagnosis. In addition a schizoids narcissistic supply is most likely internal rather than external. Covert schizoid behaviour is noted for being very "Me, me, me".

People have literally despised me for being narcissistic. I don't strive to be more or less of anything just rather allowing myself to be and I am very self inflated and self centred. Think about how many schizoids come on here to talk about themselves also.

Not only do they mix, but they get confused a lot, and are sometimes interchangeable for some people. It depends on your definition of narcissism, but if it is about being self-centered, then yes. Not impossible that someone could have a hidden grandiosity as well, but for whatever reason would hide it, and end up frustrated and avoid people.

I score pretty low on the self-centeredness (almost not there), but average on grandiosity.

For sure, it is called confidence, especially projected confidence, so whatever you want others to think about you. So you have a spectrum ranging from grandiosity, to the subservient. Then you have in the middle, which could be called confidence.

As far as self-centeredness goes, there is also a just middle between someone that never talks about themselves, and that always do. Or that just think about themselves, like an entitled person, or the opposite which is self-effacing.

This describes me as well. As well as an unrealistic sense of entitlement. Thank you for so eloquently putting into words what I always called my 'superiority complex' (the portion in boldface)

I should add that I am not aggressive with these traits where others are concerned. At least not outwardly. This might be the difference between me having true NPD traits and just being a self-important prick. :D

I would link it to the sense of self.

The schizoid´s sense of self is dependent on itself.
Interaction with other people has the potential to destroy this self-image.
Interaction is a possible threat.

The narcissists´ sense of self is dependent on others.
No interaction with others (no narcissistic supply) has the potential to destroy this self-image. Interaction is a possible breeding ground.

I think thats a direct opposite. In my opinion there is no possibility for comorbidity. If the sole breeding ground is the biggest threat (I don´t even think it would come to that) you would align yourself in another way.

Second big difference: empathy. The schizoid has it on varying levels, the narcissist doesn´t.

Well, of course there are fairly unsuccessful narcissists, who out of necessity withdraw, which is, on an external level, a schizoid mechanism, but not on an internal level.
Same as some secret schizoids, who, in an attempt to compensate, apply narcissistic behaviour, but again only on an external, behavioural level.

narc.-watching: I think you can spot them when they try to haul in perceptions about them or the whole “you´re stupid, because [I somehow think] you think you´re superior”-thing, which is just a weak ego and dependency.

.... no homo, äh, no diagnose.

Yeah...they can mix. However, I don't find the "Pure" or severe cases of Schizoid Personality Disorder involve Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The narcissism in "Pure" or severe cases of Schizoid Personality Disorder exists in the fantasy life or, in other words, in the person's own head...not in reality or, in other words, the external world as in Narcissistic Personality Disorder (where it can cause great damage to others).
Your one and only resident Schizoid (in most places).

Everyone has avoidant traits at times. As well as histrionic, borderline, antisocial, and paranoid. But are they really PD traits? I think there is a big difference between PD traits and character flaws.
