How about cards? Solitaire?

Or puzzle books, like crosswords, word search, etc?

Could always look into an mp3 player and a pair of headphones and zone out.

You know, there's actually a golf course not too far from here. I'd be banned for life just by looking at it, but golf does seem like a nice sport, customary elitism aside.

I've always wanted to play tennis (don't know if I'd actually like it, but that's besides the point...), but every time there was someone I could play against, no matter how much I insisted, they wouldn't want to play. I have tried bowling. It's fun. I wouldn't mind practicing alone. A few years ago they did open a bowling alley a few blocks away, but it didn't even last a single year.

I thought about making a habit out of going to the movies once or twice every week, but the (only) local theater only seems to screen children's movies or dubbed movies. Frickin shithole I live in  I guess people here are just too social. All they care about is "socializing". Actual things to do (either in group or alone) don't seem to be much of a priority.

Two sports I don't mind doing if I am in the mood are racket ball (similar to tennis but I play against a concrete wall) and mountain climbing (indoors-- no mountains where I live). Climbing is interesting because it tests your kinesthetics. You have to bear your weight and choose where to step strategically. I don't know the rules to racket ball, but since I am playing by myself, it doesn't matter. One thing I would like to do at some point in my life is learn to swim.

Yes, I like those. (Not exactly Solitaire or even cards, but similar games, and some types of puzzles too.) If you count my computer as an "mp3 player", I think I have five of them. I listen to music all the time, but to me it doesn't really count as an activity or even as something to fill my time with. It's just "minimum requirements". I think I really need something that needs both my brain and my hands.

I used to play the keyboard when I was younger, for example. I'm sure I'd like to do it again, but I've already bought and sold four keyboards over the years. I don't know exactly why, but I get impatient and (consequently) bored with it. I get obsessed with getting better at doing the exact same thing (playing the same songs, in this case), and it stops being fun at all and becomes sort-of an obligation. With very few exceptions, there's no real method or technique beyond the basics, just repetition and more repetition.

I guess what I'm looking for is some activity I can be content with even when I'm not (yet) good at it, that allows me to feel that I've accomplished something simply by managing to do it on my own, coming up with ideas on-the-fly that will allow me to do it better in the future, and so on.

(Sorry if it seems like I'm refusing all suggestions. I know I'm difficult. I appreciate the responses.)

I really don't think there's a racketball court available around here (not without an expensive club membership, or maybe even with one), but I guess I should at least make sure that there isn't (which I haven't yet). I've tried swimming already, I'm awful at it!... But if you have the required energy and coordination, it's worth it. I recommend it.

I think what I'm really getting out of this discussion is some motivation to move that I had already lost. Work harder, etc.

Have you tried tai chi? I know that it's probably not what you meant by "doing something with your hands" but I think it fits your other criteria.
You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.
