It may sound silly, but this is actually something I can't do without significant discomfort. I can't give someone a gift just because I know they will like it. I must understand the meaning of it.

I gave some flowers on a random day before. I didn't know it was a bad thing.

No, I didn't mean it was dumb to give flowers on a random day. I meant it's dumb to give flowers on a random day when there's something they're trying to hide- because there's a chance it'd make her paranoid and if there's something they're trying to cover up then it only increases the risk of them being exposed. If there's nothing they're hiding, they can be paranoid all they want and it doesn't really matter.
You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.

Quite the charmer :!:

Anyways, I think the way in which she addressed you was very professional.

I've had the experience a few times of people confessing to me, and to be honest, as cliche as it sounds, I admire the courage, as I would never do it myself.

Kudos to you.

Seeing this thread again made me think of the question, "Why do you ask someone out?"

Googling that gives you a ton of answers to an entirely different question, "How do you ask someone out?"

There's a joke in there, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I was told flowers meant friendship, so I knew what I was doing.

Ok, it makes more sense. I can assure you though, that people are dumb like that in real life. I have seen it a few times. You receive something out of nowhere, and then you learn they were backstabbing you.

Oh I didn't really mean the socially established meaning of the gift. I meant the meaning it will have for the specific person in a specific situation. What it represents is all that matters. Also, the gift must be something that I appreciate as well (in some way or another — doesn't mean it has to be something that I would ever want for myself).

If all a gift means is "I am following this or that established ritual/convention", then it means nothing to me, and I don't care if it means anything to the person I would be giving it to. What's the point of giving it if it has meaning to them but not to me? They might as well just buy one for themselves. To me, this kind of thing is worse than a plain, regular lie. I'm the one giving it, but it's not coming from me. It's a symbol that represents nothing. I don't sign my name under empty gestures.

I could argue that what really matter is not what it means to you, but what it means to the other, since that is the point of communication. Can be both too.

I am sure you did something at least once in your life that did not have any special meaning to you, but had one for the others.

Most of my interactions are like that anyway. Every time someone greets me somewhere, it is meaningless, and I answer to keep the peace. If it was just for me, people would ignore each others unless necessary.

But presents are not greetings, and people you give presents to are not someone somewhere. Also, I actually do avoid greeting people in many circumstances, because it does feel like an empty gesture to me. It bugs me every time when I say "good morning" if I don't want the person to have a good morning, and every time I say "hi" when I don't want to acknowledge their presence.

Some people really get hurt when you do that though. Just saying.
