My sister tells me that a lot of her friends like me.

Apparently I'm cute....and funny(when drunk).

The odd times when I'm around her friends, I'm completely oblivious to their apparent flirting.
I'm just completely uninterested, and I think they view this as me being shy & playing hard to get.

I don't know much about women, but I think they like the challenge of trying to "hook" a man who is shy and/or playing hard to get. However that's not what I'm doing.

I then have to tell my sister to tell them to look elsewhere. If they're looking for romance/sexual adventure then they've come to the wrong person. Go and read "50 shades of grey" or something and leave me alone.

Are you saying that when someone says they like you it is a covert put down?

Or they're trying to sympathize.

I was just trying to clarify what you said.

I would have thought it was some sort of praise. It never occurred to me it could be an insult too.

- You know, Johnny Joe, I like you, but...

In many contexts, explicitly declaring an ostensibly positive stance implies a more relevant negative stance. Like a husband giving his wife a huge basket of flowers on a seemingly random day. Any form of praise can be an insult.

I don't see why she complains. Does marriage comes with a calendar of relevant dates where flowers have to be bought?

No, but if an otherwise uncreative man does that type of thing, odds are something is off.

Otherwise uncreative? Because a bouquet is the most creative expression of love. I think it only means something is off in books and TV, I wouldn't think someone would be that dumb in real life.

Anyway, if someone told me they liked me I would probably tell them that I don't know them that well (because I don't know anyone that well).
You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.

 But.... but... it's a random day!

I wouldn't think someone would be that dumb in real life.

Let's say I wouldn't be so sure of that.

I gave some flowers on a random day before. I didn't know it was a bad thing.

Me too, and my then-girlfriend was quite pleased. Its only bad if they're paranoid. Little did she know it was a cover for me cheating on her

I'm kidding of course. They made her happy and money wasn't a problem, so why not?
