Weight gain problems

Postby p4tr1ce » Sun Jan 15, 2017 10:20 am

Hi all I'm new here and just wondering has anyone else had problems with weight gain on these anti psychotic meds? If so what do you do to try to lose weight?

I have put on weight since starting olanzapine although I'm still within the healthy rang. to fight it i've tried exercising a lot and trying to eat less/healthy e.g. fruit. I'm afraid I don't think there is an easy fix.

I've gained a lot of weight since I've started meds, usually the only way I can lose weight is through exercise. I usually try to do 30 day challenges but I've never lost any significant amount long term and I don't think I'll ever make it back to my original size. Sometimes the only thing you can do is try to be healthy and accept how your body reacts to it. You could also talk to your psych about changing to a weight neutral medication

Starting off on Seraquel I jumped from 180 to 220.. What really did me in was the sleep eating waking up with chocolate all over yourself lol.
I've dropped back down to a healthy weight for myself.. My tips are, DON'T buy any junk food with those munchies I will eat bags, snack on trail mix or something like that.. and keep drinking water if you feel hungry.. which in return will help your entire body, Once you get used to the meds it becomes a lot easier :)

I'm a skinny f*cker, so the weight gain is like my favourite effect of the meds :P

I gain weight in proportion to the increase in food intake (I assume this is how it generally is?).

I am schizoaffective and on three different atypical antipsychotics and an antidepressant and I got to 200 lbs. on these meds. I am 5'8" and female. I lost 54 lbs. and my BMI is now 22.3
I lost the weight using the calorie tracking app. www.MyFitnessPal.com and tracking all my calories scrupulously on this app every day, even after losing the weight. Also, by never drinking my calories. That means no fruit juices, pop, alcohol or cream in coffee. I drink mostly plain water and black coffee with no additives. I weigh myself first thing in the morning, every now and then, just to make sure I'm staying on track, and I record this weight. I do some form of favorite exercise or two everyday. Doesn't matter what you do as long as you enjoy it and it's effective. I play piano and do yoga and take the stairs in my apartment everyday. Your regimen might look different. I track my exercise calories on www.MyFitnessPal.com too. Once you get used to it all, it becomes second nature. Happy fitness!
