Medication

Hi! I'm new here. I was diagnosed Bipolar type I when I was 19 but, with the development of new symptoms, changed to Schizoaffective - type Bipolar.

I've been on meds for 6 years, but now I changed Psychiatrists and I was put on Topiramate as mood stabilizer. The thing is, I can't find much information on this med, and I wanted to know if any of you has ever tried it or know anything about this drug action as a mood stabilizer.

I used to take topiramate at a low dose and it's probably one of my favorite anticonvulsants. It kept my extreme moods not so extreme, but didn't make me flat either. Also it helped fight the increased appetite and weight gain from my other meds. I'm actually going to ask my pdoc sometime soon if I can go back on it. The key word is "low dose" because at higher doses it tends to really slow down my thought process-- 50mg is perfect for me.
