Aversion to human physical contact

Postby paintingmusic » Fri Aug 19, 2016 2:17 am

Hi,

Over the years, my diagnosis changed a few times.

1999: schizophreniform disorder
2001: paranoid schizophrenia
2013: bipolar with psychotic features + OCD + OCPD | with possibility of schizoaffective disorder

I'm trying to figure things out, so my question is rather simple:

Does anyone here have an aversion to human physical contact? Not caused by any fear, but simply an aversion?

I mean, I don't mind holding/petting a cat, but can't stand being touched by another human being. Even giving my mother a hug demands LOTS of effort. I have never been a victim of abuse, and I have been in romantic situations while in my teens and enjoyed it, but I'm 39 now, I haven't been in a relationship since my first psychosis which began in 1998, and I couldn't possibly see myself giving a kiss to someone as much as I dislike being touched.

I also have an aversion to physical contact by other people, although I've always blamed that on my PTSD. I'm interested in what others with schizoaffective/schizophrenia/bipolar without trauma history say though.

Thanks for answering

I'm really sorry you've had a hard time.

I imagine for many who are strictly bipolar, it must be the opposite actually.. with the hypersexuality that many mention. My cousin is also bipolar (although, without psychosis, and "schizo" was never brought up), and hugs/physical contact seem to be a crucial part of her life.

I have Schizoaffective Bipolar type, and I have no problem with physical contact. I do know a couple of people diagnosed with OCD, and they have an aversion to touching people. Both of them have it, one is because he's afraid of germs (he doesn't really touch anything), but the other just doesn't like being touched. I also know an autistic adult who has a major aversion to being touched. I forgot this the one time I met him and tried to hug him, and he screamed.
