I thought it was pronounced like "skitzo", but when I asked my psychiatrist about my diagnosis, she pronounced it "skeezo". She was not the one that diagnosed me, and she said it really slowly while looking at the paper hard, like she wasn't sure how to pronounce it. Shouldn't she be familiar with it, or is that the correct way to pronounce it?

Is your pdoc of american descent? Many foreign pdocs are taught the names pronounced in a different dialect. I would be direct and ask him/her why s/he pronounces it this way?
If unsure of your docs creditials see her degrees, they should be displayed. And ask the definition of the dx.

I'm pretty sure she is American. She doesn't have an accent or anything.

Your doctor pronounced it correctly. The faculty at my school were VERY adamant about this. The first syllable is SKEE.
In my experience, some doctors pronounce it this way, some pronounce it the other way. I've asked a couple why they don't say "SKEE" and they have told me that they're caving - just like the way some doctors now pronounce pedophilia "ped" like "pedal" instead of the correct "peed" like "pediatrician."
It bugs me - I will always pronounce it SKEE. And I'm pretty sure ANY ivy league psych program will always pronounce it that way. I'm American, BTW - born and raised. BRAVO to your doctor for the CORRECT pronunciation!

Yea, it's SKEE. I've have 4-5 doctors tell me it's that way.
...although I refuse to say it the proper way. a little rebellion never hurt.
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
