A friend...

All the people in my group of friends call me Kat, except one. He is a fairly close friend, but he doesnt call me by the name I usually go by. He has occasionally called me Katherine (my full first name), but usually calls me strange things, like Champ or Chief, or by my family name.

I really want to know why this is.

It sounds to me like this person is either military (re calling you by your "family name" and chief or champ) or he feels that by not calling you by the personal name that you go by he can avoid getting too close. How does he refer to other friends???

It might be habitual in his nature to call friends by different names. Contrast the way he refers to other friends and see if he refers to them by different names.

If he doesn't, this may imply that, since you guys share a close friendship, he feels at ease with you. As a result, he may feel that it is normal to call you different names.

Thanks all for your replies. I suspect Poohbear01 may be right as this friend tends to call other friends by their names.
