Amnesia resulting in forgotten rape, what to tell them?

Postby ganelon » Thu Jul 09, 2009 12:27 pm

My girlfriend has amnesia from head trauma, she recovered but relapses now and again. Right now she has been relapsing for about a week and doesn't remember being gang raped. She's been having dreams about parts of it and thinks the dreams are about something bad that happened to her but isn't sure. She's asking me about it and what the dreams are about, but I haven't been able to tell her.

I really don't know what to do, I've never talked about it with anyone, should I tell her? will it bring back terrible memories that she might be better off not having? If I should tell her how should I do it?

If it matters at all it happened 2 and a half years ago and she's always had a nightmares now and then about it.

This is a tough one, but she will likely remember some parts eventually, more then the nightmares.... I think I'd want to know why I have such a big gap between things, but it is traumatic, doesn't mean she wont remember, she already is starting too. How about convincing her to go and talk to someone ?

If she is continuing to ask about it you may want to tell her though it'll be hard....it is better to know then not in the long run. You said it's been 2 years? Why wasn't she before this about it ?

The rape was 2 years ago, the head trauma that led to the memory loss happened late last summer. Her memory came back after a few months but she had an amnesia relapse recently.

Yeah, she has. It was actually one of the first things she remembered, worked through it with her and she was recovering. So I should tell her about it next time she asks me about the dreams?

You should tell her. Even though, the memory of the rape is forgotten it MIGHT still bother her. It is mentally unhealthy to blackout traumas.

You should tell her, If she remembers later or if her mother/family member tells her and she knows that you knew but didn't tell her she will be upset by that, although I totally understand you not wanting to and it is very commendable and kind, In the long run she needs to be able to trust your honesty. These dreams will be making her anxious as she will feel afraid and have partial memories, but she wont know why she is afraid, making her feel more anxious. This is my opinion of how I think I would feel in that situation. I hope this helps
