It's been about a year

Postby MizzCatharine » Mon Jul 27, 2009 6:22 pm

since i was raped. I dont really feel pain(not consciously anyway) but I do think about rape--not mine necessarily.
My bf is a bit concerned..really, just a bit, but still concerned.
I think I read somewhere that about a year later, the vic has recovered.
Also, since I'm seemingly past the traumatic part of it, is therapy regarding it pointless?
I was able to see the best shrink(who went to Harvard) for a few months, but coverage ran out. So I was mostly on my own

I guess i've rambled enough

Everyone with recovery is different. Some people are able to let it go a year or so, but a year isn't long at all. It took me over 8 yrs or more to be able to let it go, to heal and move on but I was also in therapy all that time as well. Have you looked into getting any self-help books on it ? About PTSD, or healing, survivors etc?

Yes..I recent purcharsed http://www.amazon.com/PTSD-Workbook-Eff ... _dtl_txt_4 &
http://www.amazon.com/Trauma-Recovery-A ... pd_sim_b_8

The second book was written by a pioneer in PTSD..I think she is the one that came up with the term CPTSD(complex ptsd) which would definitely be helpful for people who have endured traumas on a day in day out basis(like child abuse).
I am confident the DSM will add C-PTSD eventually. The DSM is not a perfect book..I mean up until the late 60s or early 70s, homosexuality was listed as a behavioral prob. Maybe they'll come around on this too. But then again, I'm not a psychiatrist, so for all I know, the CPTSD could be a bunch of bunk..sounds good to me though

I guess I should actually do the workbook, I started it but put it aside. It's a pretty thorough and impressive workbook.
I swear I wont procrastinate doing it anymore LOL!

Let me know how the workbook goes I was debating whether or not to get it myself when I was feeling how you are now. I have no doubt that it will be hard to do it, but I think it could be really helpful especially since you are unable right now to get back into counseling, at least it's something. I've heard of complex ptsd, all you can do is take it a day at a time, I say that a lot. ;)

Let me know how the book goes!

I have the book trauma and recovery, I found it really helpful.... I hope it helps you as much as it's helped me... it really goes into how someone feels with trauma etc, and a lot of different ways to cope, helps you understand what you are going through.
