Screaming myself awake- PTSD Nightmares

Postby LonelyVictim » Mon Jan 29, 2018 10:05 pm

I can't stop having nightmares where I am either trapped physically or my rapist is in the dream. I will scream in my dreams, and eventually scream in real life too. I will either wake myself up due to my screams or a family member will come into my room and wake me up because I woke them due to my screaming. I had nightmares back in December around the anniversary of my rape, but now they are back and nightly. Sometimes I don't full-out scream in my sleep, but moan loudly enough to wake myself or others. Does anyone else struggle with this? Or does anyone have advice for me?

You aren't alone with this. I don't usually end up all out screaming but just moaning loudly enough to wake myself up. I've never really worked out what to do about it. I have multiple traumas and so some of the ones that I've resolved don't bother me in my dreams any more. So I suppose the answer for any of what is still being dreamt about is to continue to try to work through resolving these until a point so as to not dream about it any more... I'm not sure if that's the answer but that's the conclusion I've always come to. Also, reducing the stress that leads to more frequent dreams has helped me too.
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.
