Ready to deal with it?

Postby jilkens » Fri Jan 13, 2012 5:18 am

How do you know when you're ready to start processing the trauma?

I was asked by my therapist today if I was ready to begin discussing what happened or attend a group for other people who went through the same, but I told her no. I don't feel ready at all. There's a part of me who does want to deal with it and move on, though. How do you know which side to listen to?
Blame it on me, but know that I won't regret one iota.

I think it is a difficult question but that if you are asking the question and thinking about it then you may well be ready to start work on it. It is not going to be easy but if you are thinking about it you might want to start work on it otherwise it will all just be festering. That's my 2 cents anyhow

Gee that's a really tough question...

I think for me personally, when I'm ready to start dealing with a particular aspect of the trauma, I get to a stage where I just feel like I need to blurt it all out regardless of the negative consequences. Like I can't hold it in any more. Like I need to tell someone or I will burst from all the negative emotions I am feeling.

It would probably be different for everyone though. Recovery is a very individual thing.

I think it's good that you are starting to ask yourself this question. It is a positive sign that you are moving forward that you are starting to think about this.
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.
