Do you, fellow abuse survivors, hate abusers?

Postby david439 » Sun Sep 04, 2011 8:19 am

Oh boy do I ever. I hate people who prey on those who are weaker than them.

The title of this may be a little misleading...

I also can't stand abusers.

@ pheonixrise

Just re-read the title and I can see your point. Revised.

Totally.
Logically, I can understand they are people who likely were abused as well. Emotionally, I wish they'd curl up somewhere and die.
Blame it on me, but know that I won't regret one iota.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't hate them. They are sick individuals. They have their own mental illness. I don't like them. I'd wish that they'd pay for the harm they've caused. But "hate" is a very strong word. I guess I'm Buddha-like or something.

I'm going to be in the minority here also...

I think I've dissociated the emotion of hate, it's not something I feel ever so I think maybe I'm not capable of it as it is stored in another dissociated part of myself. So I'm going to say that, no, I don't feel hate toward abusers.

I feel strongly anxious and a strong amount of dislike about their abusive behaviour... But I don't hate them as individuals. I actually pity them because something must have gone horribly wrong with them to lead them to those actions.
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

I dont hate my abusers. If anything I spent a long time trying to understand them. Now I see them as people who made huge mistakes. Some have owned up to their past bad choice, some do not.
The thing to do is make YOUR life what you want and let the abusers worry about their own pile of muck.

Most of the abusers I've met do what they do because they enjoy the feeling of power. Not all of them are like this. Some of them do it for fun, but I've met a lot of them who do it out of the need to feel better.

For example, in high school, there was this kid who was constantly insulting and abusing other students who were weaker than him. One day, I got fed up with him, and when he insulted someone, I told him that he was doing it only because someone insulted him, and he was just projecting his insecurity onto his victims. At that point, he was silent and I could tell that he was embarrassed. He then went on to pick fights with his groupie friends, at which point he lost all of his friends.

I have other stories like this, but the point I want to make for David is that I think if you give abusers a taste of their own medicine, they usually cower. Not all of them will, but most.

If you're being physically abused, the solution is simple -- call the police.

@ earlgraydregs

I'm with you on that. My abuser was a bipolar parent who spent a lot of time in a state of manic rage. After reading about that and other disorders/circumstances that cause violence I understand what you mean. Still, there's a part of me that becomes very angry with the abusive types, but it's tempered by the part of me that's aware of their problems. I was just venting when I wrote the op.
