Most of the abusers I've met do what they do because they enjoy the feeling of power. Not all of them are like this. Some of them do it for fun, but I've met a lot of them who do it out of the need to feel better.
For example, in high school, there was this kid who was constantly insulting and abusing other students who were weaker than him. One day, I got fed up with him, and when he insulted someone, I told him that he was doing it only because someone insulted him, and he was just projecting his insecurity onto his victims. At that point, he was silent and I could tell that he was embarrassed. He then went on to pick fights with his groupie friends, at which point he lost all of his friends.
I have other stories like this, but the point I want to make for David is that I think if you give abusers a taste of their own medicine, they usually cower. Not all of them will, but most.
If you're being physically abused, the solution is simple -- call the police.
