Introduction to forum

Postby vbright » Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:29 am

I really wasn't sure where to begin. On first glance at the forums and topics, I saw several that I could post to. I'll start here. I have a question about PTSD. Why is it so controversial among Psychiatrists? I have been to a couple that said I definitely had it, but recently, I saw a Psychiatrist that said it only happened with such people as war veterans. Is this true? I want a diagnosis that is accurate, but it seems that the "diagnosis" of PTSD is disputed even among the professionals. Any thoughts?

No it is no true that it only occurs with war veterans or anyone in a war....

It can happen when anything traumatic happens in your life be it a car accident, a death in the family, some traumatic illness, rape, assault, abuse etc.....PTSD was first thought way back to be on people in a war, but that's not true it is among everyone whose dealt with trauma.. (well not everyone but you know what I mean)

I was diagnosed with PTSD at the age of 16.. (30 now)

I've never heard a professional just stating that it's for veterans only... that's untrue.

I was surprised too...I was initially diagnosed after, in a two week period, my Son was born, My Grandmother died, and my Son died. 1 year later, my Step-son died. It's not that I WANT to have PTSD, it's that I want a true diagnosis! Thanks for the comment and the help.
