Questions for Diagnosis Paper...

Postby l1nk1nparkg1rl » Fri Mar 03, 2006 2:51 am

hi everyone! I'm a junior in high school and i'm doing a diagnosis paper about the main character, Adam, in the book "I Am The Cheese" by Robert Cormier...

http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/monkeynotes/pmCheese05.asp
please visit this site for the summary so you can clearly understand what i'm talking about... thanks :D

from the research i've done, Adam CLEARLY has PTSD, along with Panic Disorder, and Dissociative (Selective) Amnesia... but the one thing i can't seem to find an answer to is that Adam is examined 3 times annually, meaning he's been at the hospital for 3 years, and he can't remember any of the other examinations or that his father is dead... he's told again that his father is dead near the end of the book and he has the same exact physical and emotional reactions as the last 2 times... this really doesn't fit into dissociative amnesia and i can't seem to find anything that would really fit this kind of memory loss....

another thing is that i'm not exactly sure if Adam is hallucinating, delusional, or anything else pertaining to those areas... i realize that in the summary in the link above, it says that adam is delusional due to medication, but it states clearly that Adam has NOT taken his medication on that specific day of the "trip", which completely rules out over medication.... there's no disorder or even a symptom that matches a dream-like state, but parts of reality are still in touch...

i'm sure i'll have more questions as i go along with this paper... thank you SO much for your help :D

ps- my paper is due at the end of March... if you'd all like, i'll post it once i'm finished? :D

is it possible to retell the traumatic event and have it be SO stressful that a complete and total retreat/withdrawal occurs and the memories are blocked again?

Definitely!

As for your diagnosis paper, remember that Dissociation and Dissociative Amnesia can also be part of a PTSD diagnosis.
