I have been diagnosed schizoaffective for the last 23 years. I have been schizophrenic for the last 34 years. I have been very, very sick for all of these years. Mostly with delusions and extreme paranoia. Lately, at age 56, I have begun taking matters into my own hands, all the while continuing with my Dr. prescribed antipsychotics and antidepressant. I would never stop my medications.
The self therapy I have started over the last 4 months has been mindfulness breathing meditation for 15 minutes twice daily, Hatha yoga for 30 minutes every day, practicing the piano for 90 minutes every day, Lectio Divina prayer practice every morning and evening prayer every night. Rosary prayer every day. Foam rolling as needed for arthritis pain. Eating a healthy diet every day. Eating a handful of almonds every day (good for the brain). Getting at least 8- 9 hours of sleep every night (or day, whenever I can get it). Volunteering for my Church on a daily basis. Reading every day.
All of these practices have done wonders for my recovery from schizoaffective. I no longer have paranoia or delusions except for mild delusions of reference that are religious in nature, but I believe in them thoroughly so I don't consider them delusions, but real communications from God.
