Personality Disorder NOS (Mixed Personality Disorder)

Postby Apache » Sat Nov 25, 2006 8:57 pm

"Mixed Personality Disorder" is a colloquial expression for Personality Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). What it means is that you (or the person who was diagnosed) are suffering from an array of symptoms that fit a variety of personality disorder criteria, but don't meet the complete criteria for a single pathology. That sounds kind of scary, but it's really a "1 from column A, 2 from column B" kind of thing. So, you may be experiencing the paranoia associated with Paranoid Personality Disorder, but not the delusions and morbid distrust, along with the impulsive emotionality of a Histrionic Personality Disorder and the object rage of the Borderline Personality or the reactive rage of Complex Post Traumatic Stress...but you don't meet enough of the other criteria for any of these to be a complete diagnosis.

NOTE: Both the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and its international counterpart, the ICD, maintain a "Personality Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)" category.

But they strongly disagree as to what should be covered by this catchall phrase. The ICD, for instance, relegates the DSM's Narcissistic Personality Disorder to this heap, insisting that it is not a full-fledged personality disorder.

I find it better than just writing them all off as Borderlines

How about not. You are rude. You don't know what it's like to be a borderline and it's different from other PD's so you can't just say that.

Well take it as rude if you like... I have features of Borderline, Antisocial, Narcissistic, OCPD and Paranoid Personality Disorder... Got quite the mix myself whatever the hell your name is and I carry the PD-NOS dx because Complex PTSD is pretty much the reason I have what I have. So don't ######6 invalidate my experience with life. I said what the hell I said because DBT is just the icing on the cake as far as treatment in my case goes and I have the total opposite of a lot of Borderline symptoms, I was messed up as a result of being given that label and treated as if I exclusively had that one PD in particular.

Hey, simmer down everyone.

Jaime's research (bravo, btw) turned up some information on a mixed-symptom personality disorder. That way, people who normally just get lumped together with other PDs when they don't really fit the criteria for just one have another niche. It recognizes the fallibility of the classification system because humans are so different from one person to the next. Mixed Personality Disorder gives name to those who don't have a category to belong to.

Thanks for the info! :D

Yeah! Simmer down.

Next time this happens just think "What would Daniel say in this situation?"

"It is important to note that while a person may exhibit any or all of the characteristics of a personality disorder, it is not diagnosed as a disorder unless the person has trouble leading a normal life due to these issues."

Worth noting.

Wonderful take chickadee, on my handle too.

And Mspen, you can chill out with the hostility. That wont bring you anything but conflict and a ban. Please try and keep your emotion's in check.

I accept your feedback but I was commenting on psychiatric diagnosing trends when I made the borderline comment and I think that the comments in regards to people keeping their behavior in check needs to be generalized. I have been the blunt of similar posts and I have seen you make some inappropriate posts as well Jamie so it'd be nice to have that threat be general next time around... thank you and have a nice day :D
