If it's closing because of people being contacted for inappropriate reasons, then why not delete the board? Leaving it up will not resolve the problem, as evidenced by the following quote:
Ada wrote:[T]he forum will stay available for reading. [...] This availability may mean that problem users may continue to contact those of you who have been open here. Please do report ANY and ALL inappropriate messages. The mod team takes this very seriously. We won't blame you for receiving the message! And will aim to handle the report as anonymously for you as possible. The police don't want or need to know who was contacted. That's not their focus when there's a problem.
As I mentioned, the problem
could be remedied by other, less drastic means:
Erastes wrote:That's easily dealt with by means of a report-and-ban policy.
But apparently people have been slow or unwilling to report inappropriate contact:
Ada wrote:Only if people report. I know personally of three different users who weren't comfortable reporting. For various reasons. And I'm not judging that because I do get that it can be complicated. They're genuinely nice people. But the net result was that problems continued way too long.
I'm not sure how that works. If someone doesn't report inappropriate contact, how would you know they're receiving inappropriate contact? And if you do know, then surely it's because they
did report it? Well, either way, perhaps we can blame anyone who received inappropriate contact but was unwilling to report it. My suggestion still stands: a report-and-ban policy (already in place) would fix this, and if people aren't willing to report then they shouldn't really be complaining. I've certainly never experienced anything that is purported to be happening.
It still sounds like a cop-out to me. The easy excuse always centres on things to which you can have no access. And it doesn't explain what I've posted
here.
