I'm no zoophile, but I know that the loss of an animal is absolutely devastating in ways that people that have never loved an animal can never understand.

I lost my beautiful 14 year old collie dog almost 2 years ago now, and it's still as painful as it was the day it happened. I just cope with the pain better, that's all.

How do you cope with the loss of a significant other? Are there any other Zoos here who have been through something like this? I've never had something like this happen, and my heart is shattered. I keep expecting her to still be here, and then I remember...I feel so guilty and so alone...I don't know what to do. I'm falling apart. I want my baby girl back and I know I can't have her...Please help me...

She's with you, I promise you. Those who we keep in our hearts are never far from us. Dealing with death is an inevitable part of life, but I don't believe we ever lose anyone who we truly love.

Yesterday I got her ashes back from the vet. She's in a beautiful hand-carved wooden box. Yesterday we also got two inches of snow. I think the timing was perfect, because she absolutely LOVED the snow. I could see her in my mind, running and playing in it the way she used to. I cried of course, and held her for awhile, and spoke to her out loud. I told her about the weather, and how much she would love it if she were here physically. They also sent her pawprint and a bit of her fur, which made me really happy. It was bittersweet, feeling her fur again...I feel better and not quite so empty now that she's back home and in my room, where she belongs. Thank you all so much for your kindness and understanding. It has helped me a lot more than y'all could ever know. <3
