Recognizing pedophilia as a sexual orientation would mean protecting pedophiles against sexual orientation-based discriminations, but I doubt today's society would allow this. Even though society is becoming much more accepting and open about certain matters, pedophilia still remains a taboo in most societies and we should also consider religion and morals here.

Until psychiatry continues to embrace cultural elements in its books and its definitions, there are very few possibilities for pedophilia to be erased from DSM as a mental disorder and be classified and accepted as a sexual orientation.

I firmly believe pedophilia is not a mental disorder as pedophilia alone does not cause significant impairments in someone's life and it does not compromise cerebral functions. Of course pedophilia can cause severe depression and even suicidial thoughts and behavior, but that would be a symptom of depression induced by pedophilia, and not a direct consequence of pedophilia.

While a schizophrenic, for example, is not able to tell what's real and what's in their mind, a pedophile is fully capable of functioning, unless the pedophile has some illness that prevent him from functioning.
To me, it is right to consider a schizophrenic a mentally ill person, but I'm not okay with the definition of pedophilia as a mental disorder for the reasons I mentioned.

It is ridiculous that psychiatry still is influenced by social and cultural norms. If it is a science, it has to be scientific, not cultural. A cultural value should not influence a psychiatric definition, as science and cultural values must be kept separated. A cultural value is not scientifically valid.

I hope the point is clear.
