How much has therapy and medications helped PPD sufferers?

Postby Zephyrcharge » Sun Sep 01, 2013 10:26 pm

My partner has a very clear cut case of PPD, and reading this forum has been so much help in just knowing that others are having the exact same accusations thrown at them, and hearing how others deal with it. I love being with him and think he's an amazing person in every other respect, and I hate having friends and family tell me it's not worth it and to leave, when all I want is help to make it work.

He agrees he has a problem, and sometimes agrees that he will see someone to work on it. I don't think he would if I didn't push the issue though. I'm wondering how much therapy has helped other PPD sufferers, if at all, and how effective any medications they take for it are?

For me flupenthixol helped calm my extreme paranoid thoughts, it's a matter of trial and error by the psychiatrists, the first step is to get him to see a doctor they can advise the best course of action.

Hope that helps

psychotherapy is usually the treatment of choice from everything i've read, and i've been reading for months. You can possibly look up how to deal with paranoid people on your own and try implementing some of the strategies. Basically you need to be very aware of his emotions and know how to make him feel safe, at least with you. And the accusations, well they might go away, but the tendencies to have them will not. So you will always be having to focus on being the best you can be for your partner. that can be exhausting because you will eventually need someone to lean on too. You will eventually have a bad day at work and need to vent. You'll have days where you are irritable, or angry, or sad, and on those days you can't look to your partner for serious support, because they can only handle so much negativity before it rubs off on them and they take it and breed it in their own heads and then dish it back out to you. So you will need your own support network. I know some PPD's take meds to help with symptoms like anxiety or depression, but they should only be short term. The big treatment is having someone to trust be a good listener and be immune to their negative thoughts. That takes a lot of work.
