Panic attacks

Postby amy-anne » Wed Nov 02, 2005 9:22 pm

Just wondering about a couple of things. I suffer from panic attacks but only recently realised this is what they are. Do you think it is possible to cure them purely through counselling and no medication? I am reluctant to get medication if I can possibly help it but I recently found a trusted teacher who I started to tell about the abuse I suffered at home and by talking to him found it helped a lot. Is that similiar to counselling and would I benefit from telling him (or a counsellor) about my panic attacks.

Hi,

It's good to talk to anyone that you feel comfortable with about the past abuse, however a teach cannot give you the proper treatment for that or your anxiety. You can definatly try to sort out your anxiety without medication. Alot of postive self talk, breathing tecniques, self-help books can help... cognitive-behavioural therapy, which a psychiatrist or other doctor will usually help you with that...

I've benefited from therapy not just for my anxiety and panic attacks, but also my abuse issues and depression. Meds have also helped me, but if i could go without I definatly would go that route. I'd use meds as the last possible resort, try to deal with it on your own. There are book lists above that are pinned on books on panic attacks and anxiety, also self-help tecniques, perhaps you could benefit from one?

Many people experience panic attacks without further episodes or complications. There is little reason to worry if you’ve had just one or two panic attacks. However, some people who’ve experienced panic attacks go on to develop panic disorder. Panic disorder is characterized by repeated panic attacks, combined with major changes in behavior or persistent anxiety over having further attacks.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is generally viewed as the most effective form of treatment for panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the thinking patterns and behaviors that are sustaining or triggering the panic attacks. It helps you look at your fears in a more realistic light.

Medication can not cure panic attacks, they can only make the disorder controllable. Yes, panic attack can be controlled, better to use herbal supplement, counseling and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Only use medication if needed, they may cause side effects.
