Fibromyalgia

Postby Clutch » Sun Dec 05, 2010 11:32 pm

Just curious if anyone else here has this and what they think are good or bad treatment methods. I'm currently on 4 medications for it and a 5th for depression. I wasn't doing to bad with it till i quit going to the chiropractor regularly. Money is tight and the insurance doesn't renew till January so i'm trying to get through a few more weeks. So any ideas? I have thought about massage therapy but i'm not sure if insurance covers it.

Hi i was browsing i didnt even know that their was a section for fibro, i was diagnosed not to long ago. as far as what works best it depends on the location of pain, depending on where hurts worse, a physical therapist can give you streaches and exercises, you may be only be able to streach and exercise to a certain extent at first, its important to not overdo it or youll just hurt worse (been thier and still thier) umm, anyways If you do go to a message therapist make it 30 minuts at the most and tell him/her to be gental, the last message i had left a really tender swollen lump between my sholder blades for 3 days. going to a chiropractor(which most insurance will cover to an extent)is really good for those of us with fibro, I just went to a back-craker myself and felt so good afterwards. theirs books and the library that should have good info for you, I learned a lot about fibro from variouse books at the library.

I have Fibromyalgia as well, there is a very strong fibromyalgia community on a website called patientslikeme.com that is used primarily to track your conditions, treatments and symptoms, and has community forums for each condition category much like this site does (except patients like me covers a broader spectrum of chronic conditions and not just psych related ones).

Last I checked there were upwards of 13,000 registered users on that site with Fibromyalgia, at least several hundred of whom frequent the forum for that community and can give you a lot of pointers first-hand and help you navigate all the patient-reported mediation and treatment efficacy & side effect reports that are compiled into charts on the site. They're very easy to read as long as you know where to look. I hope this helps you some and that the admin will leave my post up.

Thanks to all who have posted on this forum. I am a 53 year old female living in the US in Michigan who was recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and put on Flexeril and Neurotin. I am a bit reticent to "own" this diagnosis as I was diagnosed in 2010 with Sjogren's Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis and treated with several medications. Recently, those conditions were ruled out, along with Neuropathy. I am now told that I have fibromyalgia! It is clear to me that the medical profession is a practice and not an exact science, as I once believed! I am eager to take a look at the "Patients Like Me" website.

I am newly diagnosed and new to this forum. I have a few questions:
1) has anyone with fibromyalgia experienced paralysis of their arms and/or legs?
2) how long does your paralysis last?
3) what helps?
Since 2004, I have experienced random episodes of paralysis of my arms and legs or just my legs. These episodes last from 6 to 17 hours. I sometimes go to a hospital emergency room but I regain the use of my limbs over time, whether I stay at home or go to the ER. Doctors have no answer for this condition, so I have been diagnosed with conversion disorder!

I have never suffered from full on paralsis but numbness sensory issues and dificulty doing fine or small movements. Sadly the best i can tell you is time is the remedy. Most of the time my issues were from the hips down. Burning tingeling or feeling like i am standing in water. If anyone else has advice let me know.

Has anyone tried Lyrica? It is my lifesaver. I think it is expensive everywhere in the world, but for me it's the miracle pill. I just wanted to throw this name into the pool.
I read that Venaflaxine can have similar results as Lyrica on patients with fibro, and it's a cheaper option.
Also a 10 minute session of yoga a day is already enough to give some pain relief. It's best to go to class and get some experience and after a couple classes start practicing home, really, even 10 minutes make a difference.

Sorry for your fibro, it's bull&&&&, such a mean condition.

I have Fibromyalgia and the beat thing is it progressively gets worse over time.
Not a great diagnosis to get. It's a miserable disorder... I often say its a curse.

Lyrica is the main drug prescribed for fibromyalgia, and I have heard of people having very good results with it, but I was sensitive to it and it made me lethargic as hell!
Neurontin is excellent and comes in a generic, which makes it more affordable.
Neurontin works by making the nerves less reactive to pain signals.

In case you didn't know... fibromyalgia makes you hypersensitive to pain.
I have major disc problems, as well as spinal degeneration disease and fibromyalgia exacerbates my symptoms.
I am seeing a Pain Management Specialist and have to take narcotics also to control it.

Chiropractic care and acupuncture can be extremely beneficial, as can massage therapy.
If you can't afford those, I recommend to take hot baths and buy a good massager.

Fibromyalgia affects mood, so depression can become a secondary symptom.
Not a good diagnosis, but thank goodness for modern medicine... what would
we do without it??
Good luck and I hope this helps. :D

IMHO your symptoms sound like MUCH MORE than Fibromyalgia.
I have never experienced those symptoms, not saying that it can't happen, but from what I know, fibromyalgia causes widespread pain and muscle aches.
Its called fibromyalgia because it affects the fibrous muscles and not the joints.

Truthfully, it sounds like you could possibly have Sciatica or disc disease.
It could also be a "slipped disc", aka bulging, damaged and collapsed (herniated) discs.
It also could be caused by arthritis, which causes pain due to inflammation.
I know this because I have major disc problems and arthritis as well.
If you do have fibromyalgia, it would intensify these issues.

My suggestion is to do research and see a doctor.
It sounds to me like you have a lot more going on than just fibromyalgia.

Here's are a couple of links describing the disorder... and I hope my comment helps.
GOOD LUCK!
