Recent scandals that rocked the prestigious Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA call into question the necessity of such institutions in today's educational world. Are they still a valid choice for educating young men (and now women) in this country? If so, why? If not, why not? Do they serve as proving grounds for future leaders and members of the military; or are they fancy juvenile detention centers? Does being a "military academy" with a "boys will be boys" attitude allow a culture of abuse of students; or are they the last bastion of true discipline in education? What kind of parent chooses a military school and why? In this climate of ongoing war in the Middle East, do these type of schools serve a useful purpose in preparing young men and women to choose a career serving their country in the military? You be the judge

Kan. military school has history of abuse claims
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas military school accused of fostering a culture of abuse has repeatedly settled lawsuits filed by parents, including one last year in which a federal judge found that the school knew about the potential for hazing yet allowed higher-ranking cadets to discipline students, according to court records.
