ODD

Postby jastpeiffer » Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:47 pm

Hi I am new to this forum and hoping for some suggestions.
My son was recently diagnosed with ODD. He was previously diagnosed with selective-mutism, ODD, and anxiety last year.
He is very moody, one minute he is fine and happy, the next he is throwing temper-tantrums and won't comply to anything, no matter what you do. He has weeks where is, what I call "normal" behavior, then thres are weeks where he is crazy. He becomes a different child, like he is possessed moody, pissy, defaint child. Like a teen-ager with a really bad attitude. But he is only 7 and in first grade.
Is this normal for ODD behavior. They said he didn't have bi-polar because it doesn't run it the family. Anywho. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem with their ODD child? And are there any suggestions on what to do with this behavior.
We are in the process of finding a psychologist in our area that does cognative therapy for our son and us as parent to figure out how to discapline him but not having a whole lot of luck.just wondering if anyone had any suggestions until then.
Thanks for any input!!

I have some therapeutic training and what you are describing does not sound like ODD. It sounds more like a mood disorder. I would go to a psychiatrist to get a full diagonosis. ODD does not have cycles as you are describing it is more pervasive and continuous.
