Medication for OCD

If you have OCD, what medication are you on, and has it helped you?

I'm on Sertaline and it hasn't helped at all (well, it probably stops full on panic attacks, but doesn't make the OCD go away)

Is it a good idea to discontinue medication if it doesn't help (by gradually weaning yourself off it)? My psychiatrist wants me to keep on taking it, but I'm guessing that's what he has to say, being a certified pill pusher.

I would have no problems taking meds if they didn't interfere with my day to day life but this med makes me feel quite emotionally numb... Can anyone relate?

Sertraline is an SSRI, which is the same type of drug that I took for my [diagnosed] OCD. I took mine for four years, but in the beginning I was skeptical about it too, just as you are. Give it more time. SSRIs are 'notoriously' slow to take effect. they will never take your problems away in a flash, but this is actually their advantage I believe. Other drugs are quick to take effect, but this could be just a 'false-dawn' to the patient. SSRIs give the patient a chance to make the core changes to their lives that are needed to secure a more positive future. Anyway, enough of my SSRI promotional speech.

The side-effect that you've mentined is common of SSRIs (incl. sertraline), but please just try to adapt to - and accept - it for now. Do what is needed to improve your life, and look forward to the day when you can be free of your drug.
