Lexapro and OCD

Postby nh114 » Sun Nov 23, 2008 9:06 pm

I recently started taking Lexapro (10mg) starting six days ago. I noticed that my OCD/Anxiety has been getting worse since I started taking the medication, but I heard that things may get worse before they get better and actually start working? Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this? Thanks for reading.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with OCD 4 years ago but had already been taking Lexapro (for depression) when I was diagnosed. It will indeed take a while for the drug to take effect, so, please don't wait around for it. Just get into the habit of taking it each morning and get on with your life. Over time, you will find yourself looking back and realising the good effects the drug is having on you... ...

... ...but the big thing to remember is to be patient.

Take care,
Kevin

I also took Lexapro for depression. Didn't know it could help my OCD too...interesting.

Yeh, Lexapro kind of slows the mind down, which can help people with OCD (who typically have 'racing' thoughts).

Lexapro made me worse for the first 2 weeks then worked a little for my anxiety after that but I was on 30 mg. Then it rapidly declined so I got off of it ASAP.

I'm not currently taking Lexapro, but I did in the past. It didn't really do anything for me that I noticed. Right now I'm on Cymbalta and Xanax for my Social Anxiety Disorder. It's only been two days and it seems like it's making my depression better. I can't say much for my OCD or SAD though. I'll just have to wait and find out.

How long did you take it as the 30mg dose? Lexapro takes a long long time to effective. Maybe you didn't give it enough time? I don't think many people do; or that many people even understand how the drug works.
