Obsessive-Compulsive?

Postby 2JB2 » Sun Sep 14, 2008 5:22 am

I have this friend, he is constantly suggesting I have OCD. I believe I don't. I admit I am consistently and constantly organizing and re-ordering items. For instance, at my work place, I fold all the hand-cloths after washing each one individually, and stack them to the right of the sink. I also correct people in their conversations if they used incorrect vocabulary or grammer.
He also mentioned I'm quick to anger about my and other peoples mistakes. I try not to be emotional at all, but why people do such stupid things really gets to me. That, and I feel if I make a mistake, I'm just as stupid as those people I get angry at. I can name every mistake I've made (that I'm aware of) in the last three weeks.
However, I don't think I have anything wrong with me. Though my personality may have it's edges, It's not a personality Disorder. He's wrong...right?

Heya,

A person should only be labelled with a disorder if they are struggling in life and are looking for answers and help to cope. It sounds like you are definately not struggling in your life and that these habits you have are just part of your nature - i.e. a 'tidy' nature. As such, you don't have OCD, and this guy needs to shut the hell up :)

While saying this, the things that you do can sometimes lead to OCD in people who are susceptible to it. However - and again - you don't appear to be susceptible at all.

I agree with Chucky.

And people can misinterpret a disorder cause they don't fully know about it or are just ignorant.

On a friendly note though, correcting people on their grammar and sentence structure is annoying. My cousin used to do that over little silly mistakes and drove me crazy. One time I accidental referred to the band Color me Bad as Paint me Bad and he wouldn't leave it alone.

Well, as annoying as that is, the people who do it need to be made aware of just how annoying it is. So, instead of just ignoring them, perhaps it would be better to say to them: "Correcting people for their grammar mistakes is very annoying, you know, and people will hate you for it". We all need to be told when we make mistakes or misbehave, after all.

I agree with you, and I certainly have my faults, and plenty of them. Attention deficient for one.

How does your attention deficiency manifest itself in your life? For example, does it affect your social life?; your learning?; or something else? You have OCD too, right? If you have OCD and ADD / ADHD, then it probably points to a broader problem. For example, I have Asperger's Syndrome, which results in me having OCD, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and a whole load of other stuff.

I lose focus and can get distracted easily. I can forget what I'm doing easily if something else requires my attention, but some argue thats generic.

The worst of this problem was in my early years of school. I do not have OCD though, and perhaps no right to post a response, your advice just seemed sound and I was reading some of it because I had a friend that had OCD.
