OCD, Intrusive thinking

Postby 4obama08 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 11:14 pm

Hi everyone. I am 14, and I struggle w/ OCD. I come from a longgggggggggggg history of anxiety/OCD/depression, so its no surprise that I have it too :( Anyway, my former-usual TV show that I would watch was crime shows. But a few months ago I stopped watching them cuz of my OCD. A lot of the times, I get bad thoughts like "what if i were to kill a family member" or something along those lines. and then the thought turns into like an image of that happening. Now, i know that i would NEVER EVER do something like that, but my OCD makes me think "what if i did?" Anyway, its really bugging me. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do?

ps. i'm on medicine, and have gone thru therapy already

:( Hey. I'm not a psychiatrist or anything, but it sounds a lot like anxiety disorder to me. If you're religious then I would suggest praying, because it really does help. If not, then maybe you could try doing more things to take your mind off of such negative thoughts. For one, if the show makes you think that way, why watch it y'know? It probably isn't worth the anxiety.

Hello, I understand what you are going through. I went through a very similar experience when I was aroun 16/17 years old. I would get horrible images in my head and then be afraid of if they came true and what if I hurt someone? It sounds to me a lot like OCD but an underlying anxiety dissorder could also be the cause. I have OCD brought on by my anxiety dissorder, and the best thing that I can recommend would be to speak to a counsellor/therapist (even if you have already been in therapy) about your problems. Your thoughts aren't going to turn into actions, a big thing with OCD and anxiety is that the dissorders have a tendancy of making people feel isolated. The more you talk about this the better you will feel, and will come to realize that you can overcome these feelings of fear. Don't worry, they do go away. But I would definately recommend a professional to help you come up with some effective strategies to treat your symptoms.
I wish you the best, and you are already taking steps by talking about this! :)

Hello ,
Have you been diagnosised with OCD by your doctor? As you mentioned above ,you have been disturbed with these feelings for a long while ,well then ,how long exactly have you been?and what kind of therapy have you gone through ?As to the medication treatment ,we should realize that the feelings such as anxiety ,depression,OCD ,and so on are all normal psychic reactions of human .And when this kind of feelings or thoughts come to you too frequently and affect you seriously, there is definitely something wrong with your mentation .Though meds can alleviate symptoms to some extent , the truth is youd better seek your salve where you get your sore..Cus the age of 14 years old happen to be in adolescence ,almost everyone of us have experienced that just like you do during this period .After the adolescence starts, the personality is demanded to form a sense of integrity and unification of ourself .However ,there is a speed difference between physical and psychological development ,which entails a conflict between oneness of myself and puzzling roles .On the one hand , teenagers ‘ arousing of instinct will post some problems .On the other hand , more importantly ,teenagers will feel confused in the present of new social demand soscial conflict .So the main task during asdolescence is to establish a new oneness and the impression in the others’ eyes ,and the mental position in social group. This sense of oneness is also a inceasingly enhanced confidence inside of you.,a kind of inherent continuity and oneness (the psychic inner self of a individual ). If this sense of inner self matches to the impression in the eyes of others,it is obvious that the life of this person will be more colorful and bright.During this time ,teenagers are specially concern about the image of themselves in the mind of others ,meanwhile some thoughts and ideas which objectively exist will emerge in the result of instinct on the upsurge .All these thoughts and ideas are natural with the physical development.
It is just like , a potato could grow up to be round, also it can be grotesque in shape .No matter what it is like ,potatos with all kinds of shapes are outcome of nature .We think them abnormal just because we may never saw things like this before or it never appeared in the education we have received since our childhood .We think they are unacceptable and deny them which we think will blot our good image in the eyes of others. In the process of acting negtively to them we use up too much energy and pay too much attention .That results in the negative psychic energy become more and more powerful .If we go on like this ,a kind of habitual conditioned response will be established. Then it will be more difficult to eliminate the negative psychic energy. The emergence ,development ,and fadeaway of this objective and negative energy utterly observe the rules in this material world. It is impossible that it disappear right away.
We have to understand ,that we should relearn to observe this objetive fact which is out of our control .Synchronously, we’d better learn that our psychology often cause self-defeating result .It has been proved that psychology often fan the flames of unrest inside and stir up the trouble . Our wishful thinking is useless . The negtive psychic energy will counteract the energy used to keep our daily life in peace. And the wrong goings-on in mind will maintain that negtive energy and develop it .
One of rules of psychology is the more you fear something ,the closer you will get to it .The more you wanna be in good mood ,the more you will in bad shape. On the contrary ,when you don’t fear them any more ,they will disappear gradually.
Be concerned about what you should .Do what you need to do . I hope you will soon be out of difficulties .

The only thing I can tell you about intrusive thoughts would be to take them for what they are...just thoughts...they feel like they consume you...but they're only there because your brain is putting them there...they aren't who you are...
Scar tissue has no character. It's not like skin. It doesn't show age or illness or pallor or tan. It has no pores, no hair no wrinkles, it's like a slip cover. It shields and disguises what's beneath. That's why we grow it. We have something to hide.
