Retroactive Jealousy?

Postby podo89 » Fri Jul 09, 2021 12:50 pm

Anyone here suffer with RJ? It's not a very common OCD phenomenon that is discussed however it seems a lot of us can have it. Basically Retroactive Jealousy is when you become distressed/jealous/upset/insecure (any negative feeling insert here) regarding your partner's past relationships. It can be over their sexual or emotional experiences. For me, it tends to be both.

Is that necessarily an OCD thing, I wonder?

Given that when you have OCD, it's like putting salt on all your food- it's going to flavor all your thought processes, it seems. So by that reasoning, OCD just gonna make it worse.

I had a bout of retroactive jealousy, years ago- my partner's past was quite sexually active before I met them. For a while it was getting to me, but after we had a little talk about it, I knew I was being childish about it, and forced myself to set it aside. It rarely bothers me, now. It was all before my time, I don't have an argument to stand on as to why I should be irritated about it. Whenever I'm tempted to feel a little petulant about it, I stamp it out pretty quick to keep it from getting away with me.

Like anything else OCD it's about breaking that loop. I made myself stop being uptight over it. And kept at it until it stuck.
